We've moaned on here about Ethers form this season. He certainly hasn't been the key player he was in the previous two seasons but he's still contributed three important goals and his fare share of assists for a team that struggles to score and has a distinct lack of pace up top.
Contrast that with Stewart Downing. He has scored no league goals this season and astonishingly no assists either. Scored twice in the cups (I think) the only one of any importance being against us in the quarter finals.
Just had to watch a press conference with Downing and was really surprised none of the media asked, 'Stewart, what the fuck are you doing here?'

I have never rated Downing ever, scores the odd good goal or has the odd good run but he offers nothing for me.

I thought he looked really good for Villa last season - and really stood out a mile at the Britannia. He's got ability, but he strikes you as a bit of a bottler on the really big stage

Matty always provides a relatively constant flow of assists from corners if not necessarily crosses, realistically Downing should do the same Liverpool have big players who should score with headers, Agger, Skrtel and the invariably Carroll, to not get one league assist in a season as a winger is a complete disgrace.
Hodgson could have picked any English winger and they would have more assists, Matty, Pennant, Scott Sinclair, Nathan Dyer, Albrighton, the list goes on. all players considered not good enough, and will therefore never be given a chance.

no
Matty with a kick up the arse, would be a much better player
last season though - zero confidence for some reason

To be fair to Downing, he got 9 assists and 7 goals last season for Villa.
And he did score a couple of cup goals this season.
And who was in the box for Liverpool last seaosn to get on the end of stuff? When Carroll didn't play, pretty much nobody.
I think he's lucky to get in the squad, but he's no mug.

Season before last then....you know what I meant.... When does one season end and the next one start? Are we still in 11/12, or have we moved magically into 12/13? Questions, questions, questions....

There is a danger in reading too much into individual player stats, though. Football will never really be baseball in that regard
I think team stats can be quite revealing, but I never think individual stats tell you much, especially when an 'assist' can be something as simple as a 1-yard pass, a scuffed cross, or taking a corner quite well.
Not saying Downing had a great season, but this 0 assist thing can be an easy stick to beat him senseless with.

I'll admit that when Ethers was out injured Downing did have the edge for a while, just. Otherwise it's Ethers.

No Downing is not better than Ethers. Although on last season's form I wouldn't have selected Matty either!

I would say on a par to be honest. On their day they can both be devestating, great crossers, pace and can finish, the problem is they are both inconsitent. I can't for the life of me understand how Downing got into the England squad ahead of Johnson.

7 assists for a winger who plays for a team who don't score too often is a good return for matty. Didn't realise he had that many, i would have thought he had less than that with the way he has looked. Matty just needs to focus on his dribbling again. Before the injury against Wolves a couple of seasons back, he was was taking on every fullback and had bags of confidence, but now it looks as if he's scared to even run at someone!

7 assists for a winger who plays for a team who don't score too often is a good return for matty. This Downing didn't score a goal and didn't have an assist all last season How he managed to get in the England squad is beyond me

Nahh you're missing my point mate, I meant it was last season as in not in the present so in my opinion he doesn't validate his call up. and I agree with the season cross over ;D

Simple question. Would you swap Downing for Matty in our team?
Simple answer - in a heartbeat.

Downing needs to shut the fuck up and start doing a bit on the field. He's utter wank at the moment.

Stoke tinted specs time again.
Downing's no world beater but he's better than Etherington.
