before they have got on the pitch..do they just leave the technical area and thats a sub wasted? Or does the team have to remove a player from the pitch and keep the the 3 allowed subs?

It's akin to being sent off after the final whistle isn't it? The only thing it would impact upon is the sent off player's ability to play in the game. 11 would stay on the pitch and his team would still have however many substitutes they had remaining before the player was sent off.

Depends when he gets red carded.
If he is red carded before the kickoff the team can replace him.
If he gets red carded during the game then they lose him as a sub and can't replace.

Didn't one of our subs warming up once get booked for kicking the ball back to the goalie after he thought a corner ( Man City I think) had gone behind the line...He came onto the playing area to kick the ball back to goalie, but ref and linesman didnt award goal kick, so technically ball was still in play...Ben someone if I remember right

Answer: Improve The named substitute must leave the technical area and is no longer an eligible substitute. Most leagues also require that this player miss the next match as well.
Their team is not required to remove a player from the field, nor do they lose any of their 3 allowed substitution opportunities.

All right then....what if the sub is coming on, the numbers are being held up for the switch by the fourth official and the ref sends the sub off for foul and abusive language whilst he is stood waiting to come on???? Is he now officially part of play and the player who was being subbed has to still leave and the sub is red carded?

Its a bit like a team arranging to make a substitution, names for the swap given to the 4th official, then something happens in the game and the substitution is altered or cancelled. In 1979-80 we had a player sent off against Burnley in the cup, McNally the ref was, hated him for years
