I read on the BBC website that before the last game Shawcross had been responsible for the most defensive clearances in the Premiership a total of 464
the amazing stat is that the second in the list is Ferdinand of QPR with 303
thats a massive gap!
does anybody have a link for these stats?
tells us something about the amount of pressure we put on our centre backs

that's amazing.....464 "Through balls" to the forwards in a season!! far more than any midfielders manage!

Blimey! What is the definition of a clearance? Say if a MF passed it back for him to hoof it upfield, would that be a clearance? If so, that's at least 10 a game right there.
Anyway, how come Huth wasn't 2nd?

It's not surprising, Stoke defend for majority of the games they play in,it follows that they will make more defensive clearances than other teams who spend more time in possession and on the attack.

all of our attacking play comes from a "Defensive Clearance" so this indicates to me that we are actually the most attacking team in the division.

That is a cracking stat.
50% more clearances than the next defender in the league?
How is that even possible?

Presumably it counts every long ball onto Crouch's head (which he is very good at, by the way) as a clearance?

Shawcross has the highest clearance stats...
Stoke have the lowest percentage stats...
Casual relationship?

Presumably it counts every long ball onto Crouch's head (which he is very good at, by the way) as a clearance? Yeah. You're probably right, MD. Maybe every hoof from the back-line into the opposition half is counted as a 'clearance' when in effect it is our No.1 method of launching an attack. And it seems our CBs are pretty much on their own in that - certainly to the degree we use it

I'd bet my house he's near the top for blocked shots too.

I'd also like to see where he stands in the stats for what really matters for a centre half in a Pulis team e.g tackles, blocked shots, clearing headers and interceptions. I bet he's towards the top of those lists too!

Certainly backs up my theory that his superb season has been Ryan's best yet for us.
Well done, Skipper!

I bet he's towards the top of those lists too! This article argues that that isn't neccesarily the case, I think it makes some very good points. Also interesting that only ourselves, Citeh, ManU & Liverpool have a ratio of less than one when comparing shots that we allow inside the box compared to those outside. If you don't actually have to make a tackle in the first place then that is the sign of a really good defence. www.eplindex.com/10846/solid-premier-league-defence-epl-opta-stats.html
