Oh well!
At least we have got better at passing in the final third, the Peter Crouch factor?
These stats would look a lot worse if they added a column which was the "Prem Average" for each, you would see how dismally bad they all are. Except the defensive ones of course.

We've had nearly 100 less shots this season! Is this because of orders or because we just are not creating shooting opportunities? Probably both!
The way we play does not lend itself to numerous shooting opportunities - more the pity!

It's strange because our manager relies heavily on stats in his defence of certain baffling team selections, so I'm sure he is also fully aware of these too.
The fact that we have done little to improve them raises some interesting questions......

I guess the good news is that, even without these stats, it's very clear where we need to improve! And we can only get better!

The point being that our wingers have once again proven that they're as good as anybody at getting accurate deliveries into the box. The issue is that we don't do anything else. There is no movement in front of our wingers, there are no runs into the channels, we don't get in behind defences, there is no pace, no unpredictablity, no nothing. We are the easiest team in the league to defend against because we have the slowest, most predictable, most immobile forward line in the Premiership.

If the job is so hard for the wingers then how do they manage so many crosses? Sound like miracle workers to me

In the entire Premier League, only the wingers at Spurs have got a better crossing accuracy percentage than ours. to be fair Paul you can only really use that stat if you also look at the actual number of crosses put in to refer to i.e. if we put in 2 crosses but Man City put in 100 crosses then it would be far easier for us to get a higher percentage of accurate crosses than them. you have to look at all the stats together otherwise you will never get a balanced view just using percentages.

Or 50% of our strike force has been completely dire pretty much all season yet the Manager won't drop him.

What's also worrying is that the number of goals from set pieces isn't good either. A key factor has to be Pulis' defence of a lead? If Stoke are 1-0 up with 15 minutes left he protects the lead by substituting forwards with midfielders. Other teams play for a bigger victory at the risk of a draw. Of course, playing for 1-0 defeats away from home doesn't help too e.g. QPR.

Matthew Etherington = 2.1 4. Sebastian Larsson = 2.1 5. Leighton Baines = 2.1 6. Matt Jarvis = 2.0 7. Mark Gower = 1.8 8. Juan Mata = 1.8 9. Antonio Valenica = 1.7 10. Mortan Gamst Pederson = 1.7

Do you honestly think all of our problems lie solely with the wingers? Nope. Walters is a massive culprit too. Plus TP's fuck up with Woody at the start of the season and dropping of our best player, Huth. We've paid massively for over-using Walters and under-using Jerome and Fuller. We've also paid the price for having no cover for Ethers and not using Pennant enough. Loads of different issues really.

Anyone who says our Wingers have been great this season and the problems lies elsewhere need their head examining. True. Our wing play has been very poor for the most part this season in stark contrast to the previous campaign. Central defence has been excellent (Shawcross and Huth) and Crouch has ploughed a lonely but effective farrow up front. And the goalkeeping has been ok for the most part. Everything else needs attention for me...

Anyone who says our Wingers have been great this season and the problems lies elsewhere need their head examining. In attack we have not been great this season and the stas on the link highlight this. Only 29 clear cut chances created compared to 39 last season. This is very poor and certainly many backwards steps for the team. In my opinion: - we have relied on long punts to Crouch too much. He often wins the ball but there is never anyone close enough to take advantage - we have played SJW all season and he has contributed very little to our attacking threat We need more pace and we need to shoot more often!!

Personally I think anyone who thinks getting two new wingers in will be like a magic wand and make everything hunky dory is deluded as well. IMO it's about time we fucked the Mama role off.

No one is saying that the wingers have been great WD but to suggest that the issue is mainly down to them is to have not actually watched what's going on out there this season.
Wingers in general (at any club) don't put that many accurate crosses into the box, our lads are no different and in actual fact they're pretty good at it.
The problem is that because we don't have any other (open play) tactic than but to do so, then whenever they don't get a good cross in it becomes spot lighted.
If we were able to do the things that other teams do offensively, like make runs into the channels, get in behind defenders, offer unpredictablity, movement and pace in front of our wingers, then there wouldn't be the 'all or nothing' pressure we've got on our crossing.
Opposition managers know they can tell their defences to hold a high line because we have no pace in the middle, oppostion defenders know exactly what Crouch is going to do and where he's going to be, so it's sooooo easy to isolate him.
We are the easiest team in the Prem to defend against because we are the most pedestrian team going forward in the league.

We do need wingers but we also need a new forward and most importantly we need more pace in the team.
Our team has looked completely devoid of pace and creativity at times.
Its ok having the throw in as a weapon and also the set pieces etc but it'd be nice to have a Plan A of having a team on the pitch capable of creating and scoring goals from open play.

We definitely need wingers but we need more as well, yes - a left back and a shake up up front depending on who stays and who goes.

Indeed Rob. Who (exactly) are these magic wingers? If we'd had Stewart Downing and Adam Johnson playing on the flanks for us this season, we'd still have been faced with exactly the same problems. Would they have averaged more accurate crosses into the box than our guys - I'm not convinced.

When the ball is delivered into the box from the wingers (4.7 times per game apparently when both wingers are playing) there is NEVER more than 2 men in the box. Surely with the engine on him Deano should be allowed to be a late runner into the box?
