Anyone had one of these? Doc reckons i'll be training again after couple of months but does anyone who plays have any experience of game related surgery. I know pros do but they have top facilities around them.

Had Arthroscopies on both knees, do the post op exercises and you'll be fine.

I had one, did the exercises, still not fine (but a lot better than before). I suppose it depends on what the issue is.

I had an arthroscopy on my right knee exactly a year ago.
I was experiencing pain particularly during and after playing squash which I do 4 or 5 times a week.
I had an MRI scan and they said I had a torn cartilage and general wear and tear of the cartilage.
Since cartilage has no blood supply it does not repair itself. What they did was to remove the torn part of the cartilage and give the rest a general tidy up. So I now have about a third less cartilage in my right knee than I had before. The cartilage sits between your bones and acts as a shock absorber.
I can honestly tell you that a year on my knee hurts in exactly the same place only a little bit more than before. I'm no going to get the missing cartilage back and I am really not sure where to go from here. I am still playing squash and training since I decided in the end to just get on with it.
To be honest I have little faith, if any, in the medical profession to put back together a damaged knee and my advice for what its worth is to think very long and very hard before you go down the surgery route.
Save your general anesthetics for when you are really ill and you really need them.

Had 1st one done 25 years ago had both knees done twice and now have no cartilage in either one. rest for the 1st week then once swelling has gone down, then after 3 weeks on you can light jog and do the book exercise, sit in a chair place book on feet then lift feet you can do this watching telly. this is to strengthen the quads above the knee to help hold things together. No rowing machines, but bike riding is good 6 weeks on start running, only stopped playing last season at 49 years old

I had similar problem with hip last year and ended up with no cartlidge. Tried physio to build up muscle strength to compensate but pain to much to bear and risk of total disability due to bone -on-bone grinding away hip structure. Had total hip replacement. 10 months on and I am back to full fitness with little or no discomfort. I know knee structure more complicated than hip but isn't knee replacement the only long term answer?

My knee is worse now a year after the arthroscopy than it was before. I wouldn't buy the idea for one moment that you can function happily with no cartilage. Your cartilage is there for a good reason, it is a shock absorber and prevents you from having bone rubbing on bone which is in effect arthritis. My advice is think long and hard and if you have any doubts at all or there is any way you can manage without the operation then don't go there. There is no coming back.

yes long term will be a knee replacement but I have been able to play football and do lots of things that otherwise I could have given up on life and become a fat lazy fooker. I notice the change of season and some days walkin hurts , only ran on soft ground and buy good soft running shoes, and try to wear shoes that cushion my 85kg steps

Knees are probably the worst thing you can fuck up. A piece of my cartilage broke off while I was climbing, and the doctors essentially nailed it back on. That was nearly 18 months ago and it's still not right. Don't think I will be playing for England any time soon.

Well at the minute I can't play competitively at all, plus I struggle with hard exercise/training so any improvement will be a bonus. I tore the cartilidge 3 years ago whilst playing so it's a bit frustrating now. Also having a manual job doesn't help so it is a neccessity really.

5 times and counting......I have had my left knee done 3 times now and my right one done twice, they are worse now than they have ever been to be honest. First time 18 years ago and I had a lateral release on my left which was by far the worst recovery of all five times, all the rest were clean outs and re-alignments and scrapes. Stopped me playing footy, squash, badminton and the like and I have now just accepted that they will never be any better than they are now. Really annoying to be honest as although I have tried to carry on regardless, they really have stopped me doing a lot over the years, and there is seemingly nothing that can be done to rectify the problems I have. Good luck though, as said above, do all the exercises post and pre op and I'm sure all will be good

Hi...i go in on 7th July for surgery on my left knee...PCL is knackerd and they wont know exactly what is going to be done until they go in as PCL injuries normally come with other damage too. I had arthroscopy on my ankle a few years ago and it is fine now...if it hurts enough and alters your life you have to get it done....hope you make a full recovery mate.

I feel that having the bone scraped is the thing to stay away from. The cartilage is only a cushion and when broken normally the small pointy end bit comes off and this becomes inflamed or darts in and out of the joint thus becoming painful.

I'm happier knowing the cartilidge is ok and I can play again. To be honest it isn't painful at all but just swollen and bloody awkward. Been given a load of exercises to do to strengthen around the acr. Gotta go back in 6 weeks to see surgeon for a check up. Photos looked pretty funky. It's a quick turnaround in hospital now, went in at 8am, had op at 11.30am and was walking out by 3pm.

Just as an update, after having the op at the end of May I am now playing football again ( with brace ) and training without. Still gets a bit sore but is alot better than before the op. Hoping to play without brace after xmas but as i'm now working for myself I may have to lay off it a bit. Turns out it was neither my cartilidge nor my ACL. Was some sort of band that runs through the leg and across the knee that had become agitated. Physio was a great help, definately recommend seeing one if you have any trouble with knees.
