And surely that's what matters the most, right? I don't think even the most ardent Pulis loyalist is going to deny that our style of play has regressed considerably from what it was towards the end of last-season, but one thing that can't be said at the moment is that we have regressed in terms of league points and cup success.
At the end of the day, what you would rather we regressed in, style of play, or league points and cup success? Style of play for me every day of the week.
I'm not saying it becomes acceptable that we are the lowest goalscorers in the division, or that we have mustered up little over 3 shots on target per game, but I think it's important to keep some perspective, and the truth is, this season really hasn't been too bad.
We are on exactly the same points at the moment as we were after 34 games last-season, and we have a realistic possibility of beating last seasons points tally ( 6 points from 4 games required ).
Forget the style of play and number of goals and shots we've had for a moment, how many of you would've been quite happy if you were told we'd better last seasons points tally this season, and reach the knockout stages of the Europa League in the process? Not to mention being 45 minutes away from another Wembley visit aswell. The truth is, I think the vast majority would've took that outcome in a season that will clock up 56 games, I know I certainly would've.
We all know that we need to strengthen in several areas in the summer. I think we can all agree with need some more creativity in the centre of midfield, some wing cover, some proper full-backs, and more pace and goals up-front. I highly doubt we'll receive enough financial backing to address all of those problems before the summer window slams shut, but hopefully we can address some of them.
The only time I will start to question whether Tony Pulis is the right man for the job is when our points tallys and cup success starts to regress, at the moment there is very little evidence of this happening, and there hasn't been for the last 5 or so years.

Do none of these stats worry you Luke?
Make of these stats what you like
- We have scored the least number of goals in the Premier League - The least number in the whole of the Football League - We scored 46 goals in the league last year, we are currently on 32 with 5 games left. You can't win football matches unless you score goals. - We have scored 12 goals from open play all season - The least number of successful passes in the PL - The lowest possession in the PL - The lowest shot accuracy in the PL - We have managed only 84 shots on target all season (2.47 a game) - Jon Walters has scored 2 goals in 22 games ( 1 of them was a penalty) - We have failed to score in 13 games (1 in 2.61 games) - We spent £22 million in the summer - We finished with 46 points last season - We have scored 3 goals from open play since 1st January (one of them was Crouch's wonder goal against Man City) - The midfield has scored six goals between them - Robin Van Persie has scored more goals than the whole of the Stoke squad - We would be in the bottom 3 if the season started on 1st January - We have the 12th best defence in the league - 4.71 shots at goal per game (courtesy of phib)l
I know you follow the team a lot home and away like me, but you are describing for me a season where we would have been better off watching ceefax. Not want I want fella, not at all, I want more off the seat moments, the odd pass or two and not to be bottom of the bloody goals scored league in all 4 bloody leagues

To start a season so positively and give up at christmas is, quite frankly, astonishing. 40 points will always be the bench mark and as soon as we have them, sod the 800k a league position as incentive, we don't seem to care! Meanwhile people are still paying for those games and it's a travesty.
People say 'well don't go then' but i've paid £800 for us to see the season out so can i have £400 back when everyone i paid to see stopped being arsed? I think Pulis relies heavily on the die hard support this club has always had, thick n thin....the prem is a big ask of people, particularly away games and he should acknowledge that!

I'm just as desperate as anyone else to see our style of play evolve, and people are perfectly entitled to expect that after 4 seasons in the top flight and the best part of 90 million spent, but I really don't think there's a need for major panic and concern until the league points tallys start to regress.

I agree, we should approach the game with the same mindset as we did earlier in the season, but we all know that telling a player there's an extra 800K in prize money up for grabs isn't going to aspire them to put in that extra 10%. Wigan at home last season was a fine example of that, I'm pretty sure that defeat cost us about 2.5 million in league prize money, but that's not going to bother the players is it? Maybe if we put bonuses in the players contracts based on our position in the league after 38 games, it may encourage them to try and finish higher. Hopefully Pulis can get the lads fired up for these last 4 games, because a top 10 finish is very achievable if we end the season strongly, and that would mean our highest ever Premier League finish, and our highest ever prize money.

We'll have to wait and see this seasons points tally but most would expect in the same range of the previous seasons 45,47,46. But if you were running a business, and we are, the indicators above would not give you much faith in the future. Standing still in this league ultimately means going backwards.

I'm afraid we've been sussed. If, as seems very possible, Huth leaves, we'll be in deep shite. We can't score goals with our present squad and tactics, and only our defence has kept us up this time. Some might disagree, but just look at the stats.

The success of having a realistic chance of achieving our highest ever Premier League finish, reaching the last 32 of the Europa League and winning 10 games out of those 12, and reaching at least the last 8 of the FA Cup for the 3rd consecutive season. Our style of play has regressed, but what we have achieved in the league and in the cups hasn't. I'm not trying to paint this season as a great success, but it's been far from a failure either.

I'm not sure that with spending what we have this season, not regressing is good enough... Appreciate we had another decent cup run and held our heads high in Europe...
What worries me is the feeling that TPs 3 year plan may have been an agreement with Tony that if we stayed up for 2 seasons, he'd splash the cash on the third... and then see where that got us.... if that was the case, I cant help thiking he'd be disappointed

Afterall, we've beaten them in 2 out of their last 3 visits to the Britannia, and should we do so again, that will mean we require 3 more points from home games against Everton and Bolton, and an away game at QPR. It's certainly not going to be easy, but 6 points from a possible 12 is realistically achievable.

I simply compared points from last-season at this stage to what we have now, to highlight the fact we haven't actually regressed in terms of league points at the moment. I haven't told people to forget the style of Football, I would like to see our style of play evolve as much as anyone else, but having points on the board concerns me far more. In your mind, I may have been providing " error strewn selective and misleading numbers ", however, I would hope most people on here are understanding enough to realise people make typing errors from time to time, and don't seize the opportunity to use peoples typing errors as a way of trying to belittle their opinion.

Luke our points total might end up in roughly the same place but think about this for a moment ...
Last season we certainldy did not have the rub of the green when it came to refereeing decisions but as a team we were good enough for it not to matter.
In the first third of this season we had a string of match defining decisions go our way - the officials were very kind to us and our points total reflect that.
If we had got the same treatment from them this season as we had done last, would the team still have been good enough for it not to have mattered?
Since the start of the year our form has been utterly, utterly dreadful - and if we're honest we haven't been playing well all season, I haven't checked the stats but I wouldn't be surprised if we were one of the worst three teams in the division since January 1st.
It is certainly a cause for concern, erm ... now.

It is certainly a cause for concern, erm ... now. Don't disagree that we've had the rub of the green with decisions in several games, Paul, but I actually think its been pretty even both for and against us all season. There has been several incidents this season where we can count ourselves unlucky with decisions aswell. - Man City at home, we should've had a penalty for a foul from Barry, that potentially cost us 2 points - Sunderland at home, Robert Huth was wrongly sent off in the first-half, personally, I don't think we would've lost the game if he hadn't been, that potentially cost us between 1-3 points - QPR home, we were denied a pretty clear penalty late on from a foul by Barton on Huth in the area, that cost us 1 point - Fulham away, Pogrebnyak could've been sent off in the 1st half for a studs up challenge on Wilson Palacios, could've been a very different game if he'd been sent off And then other incidents in games were debateable, including both of Man Utd's penaltys in our game at Old Trafford, Wigan's soft penalty to earn a point at Stoke when Rodallega went down very easily, and Swansea away where we denied a clear penalty from a foul from Williams on Walters in the first-half. I'm not saying we shouldn't be concerned about our lack of goals and attempts on target throughout the season, I just don't think it justifies the mass hysteria that is taking place on here that's all. To have people questioning whether Pulis should remain manager at this stage, is in my opinion, ridiculous. We haven't been great this season, but we may end up achieving our record Premier League points total in a season that has included 18 cup games on top of league fixtures. I'm not saying people don't have a right to moan, I just think we need to keep some perspective and take that into consideration.
