Work has finally got underway on this... www.merseygateway.co.uk/They were standing on a floating pontoon sinking bore holes. The old bridge is looking in a bit of a bad way these days. It's 50 years old and is looking it's age. The good news is that it's not tolled at the moment , but when the new one is finished then both will be , in order to avoid congestion & toll dodging. The only downside is that the damage to the local wildlife park 'Wigg island' and a faster escape route back to Miseryside for all the car thieves.! It was knocked back at first under Camerons first few months in office but it has now got the official go ahead. Looks a bit like the one over the Dee at Queensferry , but will be much, much bigger. Anyway...I'm going to take pictures at each stage and keep them as a momento...

Well to be honest they were actually standing on the sandbanks at first , but as the tide came in they had to jump aboard...or drown. Being a land lubber , I was stood watching intrigued for quite some time. Three pork pies later I eventually waddled back to my Porsche Boxster... A blue one ..is that the one with the hidden wallet compartment ??

'knocked back' you mean 'put on hold until the lack of finances left by Labour was assessed and then the most needed projects were then given the go ahead'? The old bridge is getting maintained and painted at the moment, weekend and night closures, i went over it at 5.30AM on Monday morning, the tide was out

The Bridge is painted and maintained all year round by the way....work never stops. It has its own painting and maintenance workforce.

It was put on hold for assessment. Blocked is like the M6/M56 link from junction 19 that Labour (Alastair Darling when Transport Minister) blocked and never got going again
