After football music is the big passion in my life and there are some good music related threads on this board. I'd be interested hearing about musicians who left bands before they hit the big time. I suppose the most obvious example is Pete Best, the original drummer in The Beatles. To start with though I will use Dennis Stratton. He played guitar on the debut Iron Maiden album then found himself out of the band soon afterwards. Iron Maiden went on to become one of the most successful bands in the world whilst Stratton seemed to disappear into obscurity. Anyone got any other examples?

Weren't there like three other drummer before Dave Grohl in Nirvana? and the Foo Fighters changed their lineup a few times.
Johnny Borrell was the original bassist in the Libertines then started his own band.
Dave Mustaine did pretty well with Megadeath though right?

There were a couple of drummers before Grohl. Chad Channing was on Bleach and I'm sure there was another one too. Dale Crover? Pat Smear was in the first incarnation of the Foo Fighters and he was also Nirvanas second guitarist doing live stuff. Used to be a bit of a Nirvana geek years ago!

Was there Syd Barratt who left Pink Floyd - replaced by Dave Gilmour? Shine on crazy diamond? Wally Nightingale was lead vocalist of the pistols before Johnny?

Apart from Syd Barrat ( whom you could argue walked away from an already successful band ) all the others mentioned were sacked from their respective bands rather than just walking away. I think Pete Willis was given a nudge and glady walked anyway.
The only one I can think of was a bass player who formed a band with a close friend but then left because going to art college and being an artist had better prospects. Not many people will have heard of Stuart Sutcliffe but you can bet theyve heard of his mate, a guy called John Lennon who of course carried on with the band which did quite well.

Lemmy was kicked out of Hawkwind and then went on to become more famous than them.
Wasn't Syd gradually phased out of Pink Floyd because of his mental state? There are photos of them knocking about with all 5 of them in. Syd era Floyd pisses all over everything else they did after. Amazingly innovative psychedelia to bloated, dull, stadium shite (a few songs excepted).

Mustaine was kicked out cos of his huge drug problems. How anyone can prefer early pink Floyd to the rest is beyond me. Each to their own eh?

Does Eric Bell and Thin Lizzy count? Or even Gregg Rolie and Journey ?

Does Eric Bell and Thin Lizzy count? Or even Gregg Rolie and Journey ? Don't see why not. Eric Bell was the original Lizzy guitarist and played on their first three albums but the twin guitar sound they became well known for was developed after he was replaced by Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson. It's similar in a way to UFO, whose 'classic' sound developed after their original guitarist, Mick Bolton, was replaced by Michael Schenker. Whilst it could be argued that Journey were successful with Greg Rolie in the band their biggest worldwide selling albums, such as Escape and Frontiers, were recorded after he was replaced by Jonathan Cain. As an aside to this thread there is scope for debate on whether some band's improved or not following a line-up change. Pete Willis of Def Leppard has been mentioned already. Whilst there is no douting his ability as a guitarist I think Phil Collen's playing and songwriting helped to take them to the fabled 'next level', (along with Mutt Lange's producton). Same with Iron Maiden. Dennis Stratton's replacement, Adrian Smith's playing and songwriting helped the band to develop and improve. I am sure though there are plenty of examples of band's who took an nosedive in quality after a line up change.

There's a very good film about this story called Backbeat - I would reccommend it to any Bealtes fan or anyone who just likes a decent film en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backbeat_(film)
