I love Wilko but we need a RB as well. In my opinion, Shotton may not be the answer.

Ryan and Huthy were brilliant last night.Gutted we conceded because they were the stars of the show and took defending to a new level.

Been following Stoke for nearly 50 years and all our successful teams have been built around a sound central defence. IMO Smithy and Bluto Bloor were probably the best but Ryan and Robert are now a very close second. Cranson, Overson and Vidic were also immense as well and would have graced the PL. What happened to Vidic does anybody know? Do you mean Shtaniuk? translate.google.co.uk/translate?hl=en&sl=ru&u=http://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%25D0%25A8%25D1%2582%25D0%25B0%25D0%25BD%25D1%258E%25D0%25BA,_%25D0%25A1%25D0%25B5%25D1%2580%25D0%25B3%25D0%25B5%25D0%25B9_%25D0%259F%25D0%25B5%25D1%2582%25D1%2580%25D0%25BE%25D0%25B2%25D0%25B8%25D1%2587&ei=s3JrT8nhBYLX8QOV-P01&sa=X&oi=translate&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CCkQ7gEwAA&prev=/search%3Fq%3D%25D0%25A1%25D0%25B5%25D1%2580%25D0%25B3%25D0%25B5%25D0%25B9%2B%25D0%259F%25D0%25B5%25D1%2582%25D1%2580%25D0%25BE%25D0%25B2%25D0%25B8%25D1%2587%2B%25D0%25A8%25D1%2582%25D0%25B0%25D0%25BD%25D1%258E%25D0%25BA,%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26hs%3Dwl8%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-GB:official%26prmd%3Dimvns Looks like he had quite a long career back in Russia. Only retired in 2009, aged 36. He definitely was a class player for us at that level. Oops yes senior moment meant Shtaniuk

There aren't too many words that could do either of them justice on last nights performance, so good were they.
Ryan was immaculate last night and is by far and away the best young English centre half in the country. There is nothing wrong with his distribution either and in a top team he would look even better.
In my opinion, Huth is one of the best centre halves in the Country and I wouldn't swap him for anyone I don't think. How good would the likes of Kompany, Vidic and Terry be in a team that had to defend for as long a period as we do every game? NOt very would be my guess.
Huth loves defending, as does Ryan and the best bit of all is that they clearly love playing together, alongside each other. You can just tell that they are great mates on and off the pitch!
They were a joy to watch last night, both of them!

As bunny says, it makes you wonder what possessed him to move Huth to right back at the start of the season. It was amongst TP's most bizarre decisions as Stoke manager. Then he went from playing him at right back to dropping him altogether. Seeing Huth warming up from the bench at Swansea was a pretty ridiculous sight and one i never hope to see again. Problem is we were saying all this last season, and then come first game of the season against Chelsea, hes playing at right back again, whilst calamity Woodgate is stealing a place in the side. First and foremost we have to get in at least 1 genuine full back. Bringing in a 6 ft 4 centre back to play right back doesnt count.

Huth is my favourite Stoke player since Shtaniuk, both nails and did a damn good job. No moaning

I hope Robert gets a good shout for player of the year again. Its probably between him and Ryan anyway. Huthy was fecked about by the manager earlier in the season even being dropped. But he just got on with it and put in some top class performances. He will get my vote for sue.

Robert Huth and Ryan Shawcross epitomize everything about Stoke City Football club in recent seasons. Loyal, hard working and 100% committed to the club/manager and the supporters. Huth could have spat the proverbial dummy out when he was being inexplicably asked to play at right-back by Pulis. However, he thankfully carried on giving his utmost and now we've got the old pairing back. This pairing could play together for years (ala Adams/Bould at Arsenal).
Whilst there may be better individual players than our Rob & Ryan in the league, in terms of a partnership, I wouldn't swap them for any.
Long may it continue.
P.S Can we add a decent left back to that back four please Tony and watch us dominate world football for years to come?

There is nothing wrong with his distribution either I've just made a point of this on another thread. I watched Ryan's distribution closely against Spurs. His main ball out was the long ball to Crouch. We all know that he plays it long under the manager's instructions, but he's also very good at it. Every single time he manages to land it right on the target man's head, pretty much. You can't sniff at that when it's his job and he's performing it so well. However, there were also occasions that called for something else. There were quite a few times when he received the ball under pressure, controlled it well and managed to play a short pass to a team mate. Nothing spectacular, no Beckenbauer through balls but just good, composed play to maintain attacks or take pressure off our back line. It was right under the eye of Harry Redknapp too. In my opinion, he's better than Cahill and at least as good as Terry, who has never been anything more than a very average Premier League defender who doesn't challenge for the ball in the air. The only mistake he made was to get the ball in our half and go storming forward at full pelt with the ball, before getting closed out as he reached the final third. He clearly didn't have any idea what to do with it and I don't know why he just put his head down and charged. Still, you can forgive him one lax moment in a stellar display.

MD...One thing I always notice about Ryan is how good he is with both feet. Regardless of whether he has to clear left or right footed, he does so cleanly most of the time.
Ryan is a far better player than he is given credit for and the only dodgy aspect to his game is that at times, he can look a little cumbersome on the turn.
This can sometimes make him look a bit sluggish when in actual fact he is very quick. Huth has the same problem but once turned, both are quick over the ground.
Both are exceptional players and we are lucky to have them.
It is an absolute travesty that the likes of Jagielka, Cahill, Smalling, Jones and even John Terry (who actually can't defend for toffee - no wonder England are shit) are ahead of Ryan in the pecking order at centre half.
Ryan should partner Lescott at the heart of Englands defence. Only Ferdinand comes close to being a better defender than Ryan (unfortunately he is a very good player despite being an utter bellend) but he is always injured.

Quite simply the best young defender in the league and on form alone should be in the England squad.
Gary fucking Cahill?
Is someone taking the piss?
Edit:
And don't even get me started about Smalling and Jones!
Jesus wept!

I think Lescott is the best English defender around at the minute, but I'd definitely give Shawcross a look in at international level. I can guarantee that a defence of Shawcross and Lescott wouldn't have been quite as humiliated at the World Cup as the Upson and Terry defence was. Frankly, it's absolutely shocking on behalf of everyone in the England set up that Upson has been put on the Olympics shortlist and Shawcross hasn't.

Must say since around November (can only think they've worked on it in training), both Huth and Shawcross's distribution has certainly improved. Seeing as you mention Beckenbauer, and the role of the sweeper which is a position that requires class and quality on the ball as apposed to your standard centre half; are there any notable sweepers in the game now? Genuinly cant think of any. Seems to be a forgotton role...i know Woodgate has played there in the past but he certainly didnt for us. I guess it only really works in a back 5. (unless you have 3 very good defenders).

£7 million for Ryan/Huth combined.
An absolute steal.

£7 million for Ryan/Huth combined. An absolute steal. TP is usually very good at spotting and developing defenders.
