We have had some fabulous CBs over the years but these two lads are probably our best ever pairing at the club.Cranson and Overson were class and in their own way were Smithy and Bluto. Even by todays standards in the prem there are not many pairings to match..maybe Kompany and Toure or Vidic and Ferdinand. Robert and Ryan were tremendous again last night save for the late goal where Huth lost his man.Shame that one mistake cost them. Long may they continue together.

Kompany and Lescott's better than Toure, wouldn't swap Huthy or Shawcross for Toure.

They're absolute rocks and are the foundations of our club. They're definitely up there with the best in the league too. Honourable mention to Williams and Caulker from Swansea.

I don't know if Huth did lose his man. I thought he peeled off from two defenders. Geat attacking movement to be fair.

yes great goal
I don't understand why the top 4 aren't knocking the door down for Huth still, more than happy for these 2 to stay at Stoke

Terrific cross from Bale I reckon. They are superb though I agree, it's great to always know we're not going to concede many with them both starting together.

I'm not sure either Bunny. But by Huth's reaction...beating his fist on the turf after it went in maybe suggests he was annoyed with himself. He shouldn't be, he is a top notch defender and has been one of TP's transfer masterstrokes.

..which makes the decision to play Huth at right back utterly scandalous.
Would you see Vidic there?

The Huth at right back experiment will continue to be a mystery considering that Tone really does know how to set up and organise a central defence. All the top teams have by choice a pairing that they rarely change unless they are forced to through injury or suspension. To split up such a fabulous proven pairing was bizarre indeed.

It was an excellent goal but someone is at fault when you head in unchallenged from that distance at that stage of the match.. Looked like split second lapse in concentration from Huth. It happens.

Van Der Vaart`s game is based mostly on top quality movement as he isn't blessed with tremendous amounts of pace. He has a wonderful footballing brain & is a top player, no blame on anyone for the goal IMO.

I think the Spoz tried to break down the defence by playing through it but this failed. I think Bale, in desperation, threw a long ball into the 'box', I believe for the first time and the surprise element caught out Huth?

I wouldn't swap for Ferdy and Vidic (Ferdy is too old now), I'd think long and hard about swapping for Kompany and Lescott (never been a big fan of Lescott).
Would swap them in a nanosecond for Vidic and Kompany, but I don't think we'd get a straight swap out of the Manc Clubs!

As bunny says, it makes you wonder what possessed him to move Huth to right back at the start of the season.

As bunny says, it makes you wonder what possessed him to move Huth to right back at the start of the season. The only explanation (and its a lamish one) is that it was an attempt to play more football and keep the ball better coming out of the back using Woodgate. No harm having a look in certain game but it should have been abandoned the moment it was conceived.

Worried that Huth hasn't signed a new deal yet, especially with his family living down south.
Does he commute daily, or live on his own up here during the week?
Out of contract next summer and haven't got him nailed down yet. Some London team could be getting their teeth into him with a view to a Bosman.

Well we hoof it slightly less when Woodgate plays in my view we also defend significantly worse.

Huth and Shawcross have been outstanding , nor more so than than the last couple of weeks. We hae been undone by some world class goals against Liverpool, Chelsea and last night. Not many defenders would have stopped them
If Ryan can't get into the England squad after his few games then he never will. Unfortunately for Ryan his isn't a good passer of the ball but he was defintely better last night
Huth is simply awesome and needs a new contract pronto!!!

Couple this with Tommy and Bego as keepers. I can't think of many clubs with a better two keepers than us.

Huth and Shawcross are immense. With the addition of a bona fide left back we would have one of the best back fours in the league. If only we had a younger Rory to shield the centre-half pairing we would be virtually impenetrable through the centre of the pitch.

I've always rated Huth more than Shawcross and I really hope we keep him... and I think we will.

Been following Stoke for nearly 50 years and all our successful teams have been built around a sound central defence. IMO Smithy and Bluto Bloor were probably the best but Ryan and Robert are now a very close second. Cranson, Overson and Vidic were also immense as well and would have graced the PL. What happened to Vidic does anybody know?

Only retired in 2009, aged 36. He definitely was a class player for us at that level.
