Controversial subject, however did nobody else feel that for the first 25 mins before salif was taken off we controlled the ball well and when in possesion looked very assured???
We then lost our way for the remainder of the half!!!! agreed???
Dont get me wrong Salif is past it .... but his positioning and ball distribution for the 1st 25 last night was fantastic and tbf to the guy everytime he has pulled on the red and white stripes this year he hasnt let himself down!!!!
Salif will be at this club for a long time (a kind of vieira at citehy ambassadorial role me thinks) so all in all i think the criticism he has recieved this season is unwarranted.

Indeed Salif Diou was excellent. He is a very good footballer but he is never fit and it doesn't matter how good you are, you will never recover from playing barely any football in 3/4 years.
He did well last night though for 27 minutes.

He can shoot he cant pass and he picks up a yellow within 5 minutes of playing

We are the only club in this league that would employ him, in fact I don't think any championship club would either. That said he was fairly solid last night for the 25 mins he lasted. He deserves the criticism when he is crap and the plaudits when he's good.

dont think he was booked last night after 25 mins on the pitch!!
I actually thought he and palacios looked a good pairing last night... aside from palacios' inability to track any runners from midfield.

Yea I too thought Diao did well and there was certainly a significant difference in how Palacios played once Diao went off.
I thought Whelan had a very good game once he was on however.
I don't think it should be underestimated, just how important the 'blend' of a specific players and their specific attributes are to each other.

i think it was more a case that after 20 mins palacios had run himself into the ground and then became mostly anonymous till he was was subbed

if you look a little deeper into things, to me palacios looks a better player when he hasnt been paired with whelan.
they both cover the same areas both look to do very similar things and they dont look like they particularly get on with each other. I can see a clash of personalities, look at huth and shawcross 1 makes a tackle the other pats him on the back.
wilko and pennant same thing!! the problem that TP needs to rectifie this summer is partnerships.
huth - shawcross ----- quality wilko - pennant ------- quality ????? - ethers ------- ?????? glenn - deano ------- good understanding but not prem quality palacios ( if he is to b our 1st choice midfielder) - ?????????
and finally give jerome a shot with crouch see what happens?? what can we lose give it ago if it dont work bring someone else in!!!!!!
thoughts?????

Shame how Palacios has turned out this season - a defensive midfielder but one with an eye for a pass. Think he would have had a big impact on our general lack of creativity if the fitness had been there.
As for Diao, he's still a useful player to have in these sorts of games but his playing days must be coming to a close now.

Was it a Hamstring Diao picked up last night? If so it could be the last we see of him, unless Pulis employes him on the backroom staff.

I thought he was looking very good last night and I was disappointed when he went off. I think he has been at least decent whenever called upon this season if I'm honest.

He has played fine this season yes he always gets booked & of course on paper Palacios should be the (miles) better player but Salif has done ok this season which has perhaps caught people out(on this board) because last season he looked finished.
Would another prem club employ him? probably not however I think its daft to say Championship clubs wouldnt have him.
Ideally Palacios comes back next season fit & ready to show what he can actully do.

I groan when I see his name on the teamsheet but in fairness to him he has put in some decent shifts. His presence though merely highlights the need for better options in midfield. I would be concerned if he was still in the squad next season.

When he was on the pitch modric got in behind us 3 times, after that he barely had a sniff.
Part of Pulis reluctance to veer from the cage stems form the fact that whenever he does, he plays the wrong player in their and we get runners ambling into the box unattended. Whelan is capabel of handling the cage on his own and should be allowed to, giving palacios a run of games to get his fitness up.
When whelan game on we looked much less like conceding, and for me still knocked the ball about ok, tottenham had gotinto their stride by then so it's impossible to say the same rip roaring start from stoke wouldn't have happened if Glen had started.

diao isn't a flare player, he is very similar to rory in that he has lost pace, but most times ive seen him he has done a decent job. He is useful against sides who play it about, as he has more time to use the ball. He also can pass a ball which makes hell of a difference when you are under pressure.
Fair play to whelan last night though, up against two or three so called superstars last night and made them look no better than himself.

chorlton,
if you actually watch the replays of when modric got in behind 3 times and parker once, u will see that it was palacios who lost them on every occasion.

chorlton, if you actually watch the replays of when modric got in behind 3 times and parker once, you will see that it was palacios who lost them on every occasion. oh, so he was supposed to be tracking both of them? There is absolutely no way on this earth that palacios was supposed to be covering parker and modric, more likely he was on parker, the deeper of the two, and diao, the deeper lying of our two was supposed to track modric. When the play is open they are supposed to work as a unit and on all three of those occasions diao was nowhere to be seen. Usually Stokes CM is no more than 5 yards apart for exactly this sort of scenario. Either way we looked a hell of a lot more compact and composed as a defensive unit with Whelan on the pitch

all i will say is, look at the times modric got in behind us, palacios is on him modric plays the ball palacios takes his eyes off him stands still 2 seconds later modric is in our box with a shooting opportunity. Its there in video evidence whilst diao is watching vdv and parker

A decent player in his day but sadly the legs have gone. Once he gets his obligatory booking then he's a mis-timed tackle from a red card.

Has played well all season. Very very disiplined player (unlike Palacios) and you will find that Stoke rarely concede goals when he is on the pitch.

I think Salif has been solid this season, when he's played. He rarely loses the ball ..completing 90% of passes ...albeit sideways or backwards ..point is he doesn't give the ball to the opposition.
Plus he's a really decent bloke, really polite, conscientious, intelligent and unassuming, not the regular stereotypical footballer all bling and chrome plated.
