To take on the big boys (on their home patches)
Pretty good for an hour - but at the key passages of play when we had possession at the end of the game, a lack of passing ability let us down
Mind you we certainly did not look £50 - £100 million behind that Liverpool side
Maybe we can and will improve after this decent showing, I always feel though, we don't pick our best eleven if Pennant doesn't start.
Bloody hard week for them now, all we can do is try to shout them to a few points in games we really should have no right to get anything from
ah well ! lets see

The second half showed our limitations for all to see. A complete lack of quality at full back and in central midfield. We simply can't pass wind in these areas. A special mention to Jon"head down" Walters who pushed mediocrity to another level. I don't care how far he runs, he just isn't good enough. That chance first half was a golden opportunity and he didn't even trouble the keeper.

Phil they both covered a lot of ground but continually gave the ball away. We have spent a fortune on players and IMO we should have better midfield players than we have. Palacios has been an absolute disaster.

The other difference is that in Suarez, despicable cheating little twat as he is, they have pace and trickery up front. We have Walters and as whole hearted as he is he just isn't anything like good enough to be the ever present undroppable player he has become.

you can only get so far playing a certain way, i dont want tippy tappy crap, just some decent pass and move in the opponents half. We lost the ball in good positions too often today, you cant go to anfield and win by giving the ball away cheaply. Walters does deserve a special mention because he just doesnt pose a threat to the opposition. It wasnt an easy chance, but didnt get it near the goal. Still it could be worse, we could be wolves

Agree with most of that, however I agree with Tone for leaving out Pennant the last few weeks. He looks a shadow of the player before, but maybe that is because of being continually overlooked. He is so confidence-shy, every time he was in position to take his man on, he pulled the ball back looking for the pass or cross. Last season he was beating men for fun, now sadly, Shotton looks more dangerous. I wouldn't even consider putting this down to ability, just confidence, once he gets his chance and his form picks up he'll be back to his best. Same with Etherington, he seems to be afraid of taking people on, instead sprinting it down the touchline, and our strikers want to shoot at first opportunity, or pass it on for someone else to miss. We can pass it around though, no matter who says we can't.

They do often give the ball away but today they were fairly good. I'm pretty sure if you checked the stats Whelan did not give the ball away much today. Deano's pass to Walters was brilliant. I'm hoping Palacios will come good next year.

Tone has to learn how to change a game when plan A isn't working. We contained them well enough, but when it was our turn to ask the questions we didn't. Our subs seemed to just kill the game when we needed to have a go.
It's bring on an attacking player then play him defence to completely stifle him. Happens more than a positive game changer thats for sure.
All in all gutted but I thought we give it a good go for an hour. They created no more than us, got lucky with the second, just about edged us out. Oh for a home tie!

We had a right go for 45 minutes, but their added quality showed in the end.

The players we have in the squad are no where good enough to take us any further. The passing is awful, apart from the odd ball here and there, and much as I like Jon Walters work rate, he is not the answer up front. There definitely needs a clear out come the end of the season, as many more on here say. Big restructuring needed to move on. It,s all right saying, look at what we have achieved, but it,s also very frustrating losing out all the time, when it matters.
