As a reward for their epic run to the quarter finals of the Europa League
The plucky Mancs, destroyed this season in two European competitions by the might of teams like Basel and Benfica, have been placed into a competition they could win against teams UEFA has decided they might win against.
"It's a proud day for the club" said manager SAF, "who would have thought 5 years ago we could play Rochdale in the semi of the IOM trophy..."

I think it's just that SAF felt like having a go at a trophy which he hasn't won yet. It'll be an important achievement for him and the club*.
* Unless they lose.

The Johnstones Paint Trophy could work. To make sure they both reach the final Citeh could be parachuted into the northern section and manure into the southern section, which would also keep their main fanbase happy.
