Having lived in Santiago for about six years now, and during that time followed Universidad de Chile as my team here, I was astonished to discover recently that in 1964 a friendly was played between U. de Chile and Stoke in the National Stadium about 10 minutes' walk from my house – and in front of 80,000 people! Apparently it was part of some huge out-of-season tour the club did back then. I found these two links with scanned copies of a very detailed newspaper write-up, including pictures, from the game… mas-alla-del-horizonte.blogspot.com/2010/07/1964-universidad-de-chile-0-0-stoke.htmlwww.gigallery.com/view.php?idgal=1b5959f90b8e4966b8ea257c4352ebe9&num=0Irving, McIlroy, Ritchie, Dobing, Violett all played and the game ended goalless. The article is very complimentary about what difficult opponents Stoke were – a lot more difficult than they had imagined apparently… this '60s U. de Chile team now has legendary status. Can anyone remember this, and any other details about where we went and who we played??

Stoke's end of season tour in 63/64 was to Portugal, Colombia, Chile and Argentina. Results were a 0-0 against Belenenses( Portugal), 3-2 defeat against Santa Fe and 3-0 win against Medelin (Colombia), 0-0 against Universidad (Chile), 2-1 win against Boca Juniors, 2-1 defeat against San Lorenzo, 5-0 defeat against River Plate and 3-0 win against San Luiz (Argentina).
The Santa Fe club in Bogota was the club that Neil Franklin and George Mountford played for in their ill-fated trip.
Stoke's visit to Argentina was the first by an English club for 35 years!
Cetainly makes a change from Austria, Newport and Newcastle Town!

I do know that we played Boca Juniors in Argentina during that tour, not sure of the score, but my family were big friends of Alan Bloor's family around that time, and knowing that I was a fanatical Stoke supporting young boy, were able to get me a Boca Juniors pennant and other memorabilia which I still have (somewhere).

Pulled off one of the biggest results in the club's history ... and the manager had to let supporters know by postcard.

Washington took Stoke all over the world and not just in the close season either. Paid dividends re squad harmony and raised the clubs profile. Made money too I believe. Next time we are thinking of going to Dubai let's go somewhere else and play a friendly in front of a big crowd instead.

No not in SA...visited Argentina , Brazil ( Curitiba) ..where I saw my only SA game to date Athletico v Palmeiras , Paraguay and Uruguay in 2006 ( how time flies) .& hope to return
Been doing friendlies since 78 so Stoke touring there would be fantastic .. missed a few tours / overseas friendlies over the years pre Internet era due to lack of info , awareness of games or logistics etc ..mostly solved by the age of the Internet

My dad & Waddo would have been on the piss as per usual. Would have to get the photos from my stepmum in Stafford to Oz. Have the coffee set from the Real Madrid game proudly displayed at home. Got it from my sister in Canada shortly before she died in 2016
