I still think Salif Diao is as good as messi, has messi proved himself on a cold, rainy night when his team has parked the bus? Salif has.

A generational thing this, for me its Maradona. I was just asking my Dad if Messi was better than Maradona as I was just a kidder at the time. He reckons he is better but needs to do it in a World Cup to prove it. BTW, there's a program on ITV4 now about Messi being the greatest in the world or something.

IMO, Messi isn't even the best player in the world at the moment, Ronaldo is the better player. He is some player though.

Maradona until Messi does something worthy of note with Arge.
Plenty time for that.

Surely it should be Sidibe, Pericard and Lightbourne, those three would put the fear of god into me.

There can be little doubt that Lionel Messi is the best player in the world right now. One factor which prevents Messi from being considered the all time greaestt is his disappointing showing in the last World Cup. Despite what some of UEFAfs sponsors and marketing executives would like us to believe, the World Cup remains the pinnacle of world football. Back in the 1960Œs Australia had a runner named Ron Clarke. Clarke was a masterful runner who broke many world records. The blemish on his record is that his best Olympic performance was a mere bronze in 1964. In short he was an expert in racing against the clock but struggled to beat other runners. Clarke canft really be considered an all time great because he didnft perform at his best at the highest level. Similarly, if Messi is to be placed in the same bracket as Zidane, Pele and Maradona he needs to confirm his status by displaying his genius in Brazil in 2014. !

I was bought up having it drummed into me that Pele' was the greatest ever.
However there is one player who I feel has eclipsed everything that pele could ever do.
The reason being....
He's here,
He's there,
He every f*cking where,
SALIF DIAO ;D

Another one in the 'not untill he does something in the World Cup' camp with Messi. Clearly has the talent but needs to have one of those World Cup's where he's clearly the best player in the tournament before he can be put in the same category as Pele and Maradona.

A vote for Mama Sidibe here. I don't recall Messi flicking a ball of his sholder from a throw in with his back to goal.

Shouldn't Johan Cruyff have some part in this thread. He was no Salif Diao I know, but even so...

I can understand why some people might say Pele or Maradona were better but apart from that surely no other player is or was as good as him. If he does it in 2014 then he is at least as good as Pele and Maradona and arguably better when you consider what he's already achieved at club level.

If he does it in 2014 Messi will start to be spoke of in those terms yes. But the only reason he hasn't done that yet is because he's 24. Surely anyone watching him play can see that in terms of footballing ability he is already on a similar level to Pele and Maradona?

In ability yes no doubt. BUT....it's doing it. Messi has played in two World Cups. 2006 he was used sparingly but 2010 he was the main man who did all right. All right isn't good enough. Pele and Maradona were magnificent.

Pele and Maradona were magnificent. 1962 Pele was like Messi last WC... a lot of hype but got kicked off the park (literally). He did do it in 58 and 70 mind. Maradona's 1982 WC was in fact eerily similar to Messi in 2010. Massive build-up... didn't quite make it happen. I think Maradona was 21/22 at the time... same age as Messi at the last WC. We all know what happened next. Really hope Messi can do it in 2014 like Maradona in 1986. Would love to be able to witness that as the last two world cups have been really poor to watch.

Pele got kicked out in 66.
Thing is World Cups lack stars who emerge because now everyone is watched every week on telly.
The last two haven't had the thrills and spills previoous ones had but that's partly because every side plays to s system now and they all know so much about every opponent they can formulate a plan to stifle them.

Despite that, I thought that the Germans were very impressive. I enjoyed watching their brand of fast, attacking football. Ozil was my player of the tournament. I much preferred them to Spain, who lacked the magic of Messi that gives Barcelona's play that little extra sparkle, and who will surely go down as the most boring world champions of all time. I'm sure they don't care, but weren't they also the lowest scoring champions ever? Uruguay were also good to watch.

One for the more mature posters but I have always maintained that George Best was the greatest footballer ever.
Never got a chance to prove it on the world stage apart from with United in Europe.
The things he could do in the heat of a match would take your breath away, and he could take care of himself unlike Pele.
So difficult to judge, different eras and different contexts. If the ref had spotted the hand of god, would Maradonas rep as winning the WC single-handed be as high?
Pele and Zidane played in formidable teams, as does Messi. It was Best who made Man U, look what happened to them when he gave up to become a full-time pisshead.
Messi is unbelievable at 24, and could go on to own a WCup like Pele and Maradona but for pure talent, balls and charisma for me Best was the best.
