Is there any reason you view "Italy" as a swear word? ;D
I do remember Padova, vaguely.

I went that game, the venue was moved late on in the day to a ground which i can only describe as being like Lyme Valley. We spent the day in Venice, met Nick Hancock and had a beer with him.Remember Maureen Hudson being there, she was with Lee Sandford at the time.George Andrews was also there and have to say came across as total knob. We lost 3-0,played awful.Around 500-600 Stokies travelled. We met Joe Jordan at the airport on the way out, miserable git.

I do indeed remember the game v Padova, I was there.
Four of us drove there, (take a bow, Ada, Phil and Simes).
The game was moved from Padova's ground to another venue at the last minute, a place called Bassano Del Grappa (apologies for the spelling). It was about half an hour away by train
Those of us who'd made our own way there (including Mr. J's contingent) caught the train from Padova to Bassano. Unbeknown to us the last train back to Padova left before the game had finished. There must have been about 60 -80 of us stuck in this one horse town with no way of getting back.
After much shenanigans with the local old bill they corralled us by the station and organised for 2 taxis to ferry us all back 4 at a time. It would have taken for ever so 4 of us sneaked off from the clutches of the police, we found a little hotel and asked the receptionist to ring for a taxi for us, which thankfully she did.
We got back to Padova to find that those who'd travelled with the official trip had got back straight after the game and had some trouble with the locals, one Stoke fan being stabbed.
Some of the lads missed Mr. J's coach the next day so were stranded in Padova. Some made their way back to Stoke by train, others set off for Bologna where England were playing San Marino and cadged lifts back from England fans.
We drove back via Lyon and Poitiers (another long story, but Ada trying to order our meals in the restaurant in Lyons was pure comedy gold.)
A pretty eventful trip, can't even remember the score.
Sure I remember Werrington going that one.

Yeah....some lads from Watford and we spent the first night on the Swiss Italian border getting grief from the Italian border guards( as was back then ) and the next in Frankfurt......An Irish lorry driver finished off our hitch hiking when he picked us up from Scratchwood

yes the match was played in bassano, a small town near vicenza.poor decision. in padova at"appiani" there would have been a much better atmosphere. i know there were some problems but nothing special for that time.
what is the nearest airport from stoke?

If you're a good pilot, you can land at Meir Aerodrome fields.
Better keep an eye on your plane wheels though.

biancoscudo I visited Venice last week and didn't realise there was a fellow stokie down road. Was told by a guy outside a restaurant that his place was like the Stoke City FC stadium inside but as I said to my partner I didn't travel all the way to Venice to have a meat pie for my dinner

Drove from my then home in Milan (3.5 hours) we were 3-0 down in the first 30 ish minutes and I think it was Joe Jordans first games in charge. I also remember thinking well at least I have seen Stoke in Europe!! 18 years later and we finally got ther again in a proper competition

Thanks for that I meant to write one of his first games (Jordans). We didn't get much Stoke coverage on Italian TV and only the odd reference in the Gazzetta dello Sport in them days so never saw much of that team tbh
