After having the benefit of watching a few of our 'flair' players given decent competetive game time what is everyone's opinion of our strongest team? Always one for a knee jerk reaction I've reconsidered the strongest Stoke side as:
Bego
Shotton Shawcross Huth Wilson
Pennant Palacios Arismendi Ethers
KJ CJ
I was even tempted to play Diao ahead of Ethers with Arismendi on the left of midfield!!

I'd like to see us try 4-1-2-3 in the league. Hard to know exactly who'd be best in that system at this point, but based on last night i think this would be my starting point:-
Sorenson
Wilko Shawcross huth Wilson
Arismendi Whelan Palacios
Pennant Jones Jerome

We can all dream eh. If delap and whelan play in a 442 we will loose and be over run in midfield. Always is the case VS someone with a half decent midfield, newcastle game proved it.

I think if you want to swap Crouch for Jones in Trousers' team ... then you're kinda missing the point.

Crouch and Walters have to start after those misses by Jones.

I think if you want to swap Crouch for Jones in Trousers' team ... then you're kinda missing the point. why? Had Jones played well yesterday we would have beaten valencia and be in the next round. He missed 2 absolute sitters. No way he deserves a place in the team over crouch. The system with jerome and pennant relies on pennant and jerome covering lots of ground, and doing the running that crouch will lack. Crouch's movement off the ball (finding space, not speed) is better than Jones, he also has a better touch and a far better finish both with his head and feet. proven by his prem goal record. I don't see why it wouldn't work with Coruch as the target man rather than Jones.

Tony Pulis will never play that formation ina Premier league match and only stumbled across the formation last night due to the players he left out and had available to play.
I was encouraged by some of our players last night especially Diego.
However, we all know what the team and formation will be come 3pm on Sunday and that'll be the cage system chasing around the Swansea midfielders for 90 minutes.
My team for Sunday
Bego Wilko Huth Shawcross Wilson Pennant Palacios Arismendi Ethers Fuller Crouch
Pulis Team.
Begovic Wilko-Huth-Shawcross-Wilson Delap-Whitehead-Whelan-Ethers Crouch-Walters

I've said it before.
25,000 Stoke supporters could pick their preferred starting XI before the game on Sunday; I would guarantee that Pulis' starting XI will match very few of them.
Begovic Wilko - Huth - Ryan - Wilson Pennant - Palacios - Whitehead - Ethers Jones Jerome
Subs please around the 55-60min mark if we are again, shite. Not after 80 minutes.
Plan B from last night being implemented if required.
A bit of life being breathed into the performance wouldn't go amiss either.

I don't see why it wouldn't work with Coruch as the target man rather than Jones. I thought KJ did play well, his movement was excellent - you can't just expect a striker to drop in and out of a team and then suddenly be ruthless in front of goal - it doesn't work like that. Crouch's prem goal record is NOT better than Kenwyne's. There is no way on earth that Crouch would have made the run that Kenwyne made to even give Palacios the opportunity to put that through ball in. KJ's movement and pace was hugely important in that system working properly last night.
