Stoke City went to the top of the First Division (premier league of its day) following a 2-2 draw at home to Wolves.
Who would of thought it eh as we look forward to taking on Valencia following 4 straight defeats and a position of 13th in the Premier League.
Just look how far we have slumped.
Pulis out!

With a manager who evolved the playing style over time from a defensive unit (Waddington Wall) to a footballing style that was respected worldwide too.
Im sure we can see the same happening again. ???

I fucked off home gutted that we had seemingly missed the chance to go top. couldn't believe it when i got in and saw the table. I this another marker of where we've come from?javascript:add("%20;D")

Yes we had a great team in the seventies but let's remember it was only for a few short years coinciding mainly with the presence of one of the world's best ever players (Alan Hudson). The majority of the my Stoke supporting life of the last 50 we have been out of the top flight and largely pretty crap!

I wasn't even born on this day fella, but it just shows how ridiculous it is to look back at certain dates to justify the shortcomings that we have seen of late.
Equally, it is ridiculous to look back to Feb 15th 1975, as a stick with which to beat Pulis with.
At the end of the day we are all passionate Stokies and it doesn't matter where we have come from. The here and now is what matters and if we can't discuss our team and managers current shortcomings without being told what outcasts we should be, then what is the point.
Equally, when praise is deserved, as it has been many times under Pulis, then you should be allowed to praise without being told you are a rimmer or anything of the sort.
My opinion is that we are back where we belong but when compared with last season, our performances this season, are a backward step from what we saw then. Others disagree. I have no problem with that!
EDIT - The only problem I have is with those who continually say that Fuller is finished, should be sold or is yesterday's news. Those people are just idiots, ungrateful bastards and are incapable of understanding the game in which they claim to watch.

I know and empathise with all the points you make. Its the clowns who make Pulis out to be either a god or the devil that get on my nerves. We as a club, in my 44 years of supporting them have had some really good times but also some real dross but the mindset of the manager at the moment is stopping the "journey" from being as enjoyable as it could be.

It's also worth noting that within two years the manager was gone and we entered a spiral of decline until we appointed an arch pragtamist to the post who told people to fuck off to the circus if they wanted entertaining.
Its a funny old game Jeff.

Its a funny old game Jeff. Not quite right Momo. Two years later to get relegated not because of playing expansive football but because of the financial fall out from the butler strret stand fiasco. I believe Durbans quote was made following an awful game at Arsenal in 1979-80 season.

I still worship that wonderful man. His performance when we won the League Cup (and I was there) was out of this world.

An arch pragmatist who wasn't given £90M to spend on a team to entertain the public. Absolutely spot on. Only Waddo ihad any sort of money to spend( don't even mention mick mills!!) n terms of money at the time had anything remotely like a transfer kitty to develop a team that our tone has had at his disposal.

I remember the game against Wolves where we came back to draw after being two down with a couple of minutes to go. I don't remember it as being the game which took us to the top.

We topped the table three times that season. After Leicester at home, Birmingham away and Wolves at home.

Good thread ...
Just continuing the 'look where we've come from' perspective ...
Just seven teams have been ever presents in the Prem since it began.
Of the remaining twelve teams in the Prem this season, we played OVER HALF of them when we were in the THIRD TIER of English football.
Let's just ignore the fact, that nearly half of the Prem is actually made up of teams that have come from the same place where we have come from.

It was my first season too, and the first time I'd ever seen the crowd go absolutely mental when the equaliser went in. The fact we'd just gone top (I'm thinking for the very last time) somehow passed me by.

Also continuing the "where we've come from" theme from another perspective I think probably only 3 teams in the prem have won less than us (swansea, wigan and possibly fulham).
In my opinion in the context of our overall history the success of the last 12 months (FA cup finalists fo the first time and progress in Europe) does qualify as over achievement.

If you want to just include Stoke City in the equation, then fair do's but that hardly provides context does it? Oh Joe and friendcalledfive the Wolves games was my second match, the Man City game being the first ... I was nine at the time!
