On Sky Sports Peter Coates said that the FA paid Capello too much in wages not enough bonus based and wants the appointment to go from tournament to tournament. Also in The Independent "Stoke chairman and FA Council member Peter Coates wants a home-grown England manager and has joined the long list of people championing the claims of Redknapp. "Personally I would like the next manager to be English, or at least British," Coates told the Stoke Sentinel. "I felt Fabio Capello's lack of experience of English football was one of his downfalls. "His record as a club manager was very impressive but it didn't help that he hadn't got experience here, and he also struggled with the language. "I wouldn't be in favour of a foreign manager unless, like Arsene Wenger, they had good experience of working in England." Coates, who tried to take Redknapp to Stoke more than 20 years ago when he was still in charge at Bournemouth, believes the Tottenham boss is probably the ideal candidate to replace Capello. "I would be very happy with Harry Redknapp if he took the England job," he added. "He has earned it over a long period of time and produced a lot of good teams. Never knew he'd been after 'arry... Think it was when we hired Lou. Coates went for 'Arry and Mel Machin, but they turned us down. Lou was only third or fourth choice for the job. |

Back on topic - I just don't get this obsession with the next manager being English. Did we not have EXACTLY this whole discussion at the end of Sven's reign? Did we not end up with a smug-faced grinning buffoon as a result? Did we not then say "oh no, it's okay, we can have a foreign manager again because the English ones are useless"? Or did I imagine all that? How long will the cycle go on?

i think once we employed the first foreign manager,it matters not a jot where the next ones come from.experience at international level,man-management skills and a basic grasp of english would be a good start.

So remote are the chances of England actually winning anything, I dare say if it ever happened the last thing we'd be worrying about would be the nationality of the manager. True enough. It's a personal preference but it's not a burning issue for me. I'd be out celebrating whoever the manager was. |

I just can't get round the fact that rapid and abundant in-and-out transfer dealings have been a central feature of his entire managerial career. It's the one thing you don't have at your disposal as an international manager... And you can bet Frank Lampard would be the first name on every team sheet an' all...  |

Despite what many say Sven and FabCap were very good England managers.
Problem is as soon as something went wrong the bullshit inane foreigners have got no passion thing came into play.

David Pleat stating "At his clubs, he hasn't spent a lot of money, he has brought a type of football that the public enjoy and I think that's important." hasn't spent a lot of money????????? what is he smoking? He spent a fortune at Portsmouth - hence the mess they're now in. over the last few years surely only Man City have blown more cash on players than spurs.??? and there in lies the problem. Hes the classic 'wheeler dealer'. he doesn't develop the players hes got, he just buys them gets a year or so out of them then buys some more. that doesn't work with international football. theres talk of spurs being title contenders but the crunch games where they have needed some inspiration from the bench (eg liverpool on monday) they've come up short. spending deadline day sat in your landrover talking to sky sports and banging on about how your not going to sign anyone today, going on about players under contract at other clubs whilst constantly repeating how you don't talk about players under contract at other clubs then at 12pm you've signed 4 more of the chumps is not going to solve Englands problems one bit. |

The original post was focusing on Peter Coates' comments in various aspects of the media. I would dearly like to see an English manager manage the England team, as the FIFA nationality requirement for players (but even that's bent) should be applied to managers too.
However, does the England FA want to win a competition? I was reminded this week of the Euro 2004 champions, Greece, originally complete outsiders for the competition, being lead by German manager Otto Rehhagel.
Success can't be blinded by xenophobia.

Let's face it Alan Pardew could not lace Gerry's boots, and he has put himself right in the frame by saying he doesn't want it (yet)!

I think it is important that we have the very best we can get for the job, ideally that would be an english manager because we are England. If the best person is not english so be it, we go foreign. I actually prefer Martin O'Neill to Harry Rednapp because O'Neill has proven he can change a given squad of players without buying in too much and as a an England manager that is what you have to do, improve what we have on offer. Harry has had spending power and has been able to scout the world to bring in quality players. The advantage of having Harry is that the country and players want him and that would be a major plus when looking for improved performances. I find this all very fascinating.

What England need now more than ever is a manager that has a proven track record in international football, who has achieved good results in tournaments and knows how to get the best out of a limited squad.
