Depends on what you're doing at the gym really and what your goals are.
If you are trying to lose weight its best to exercise on an empty stomach and also not to eat immiedately after the work out too (try to leave it for at least an hour).
If you are trying to build muscle/bulk up then obviously eating is important!! Anything that has plenty of protein in.

just a general workout, but with my job being quite hectic, I'm often hungry when I get to the gym, just looking for something to fill the gap between the gym and my evening meal.

Grab a banana to give you energy and to fill you up slightly. The thing is with eating right before you go, you will not have chance to digest properly and could hinder your workout rather than actually help.
Do you not get a lunch break at work?

Meggsy is right.
Have a later dinner if you can so that you're not hungry when you get to the gym

Not much point doing gym if you aren't going to keep yourself fueled.
