How Stewart Downing has made these big money moves and got X amount of England caps totally baffles me! An average footballer at best. Biggest waste for me has to be Andy Carroll, a good player at Newcastle who now carries the weight of that fee on his shoulders and it shows. To be fair these players don't arrange these fees, but somebody at Liverpool and Chelsea (for Torres) need a severe arse kicking.

Torres is a proven top player struggling for form, Carroll is just wank. Well said, Torres proved himself at the victims year after year and is a top class player struggling for form in a team whose system doesn't suit him. Carroll is just an unbelievably average player that had a good run of form for 6 months and the Dalglish though he'd waste some more money. Carroll is the worst piece of business in the history of organised sport and will never ever make it at the highest level.

just to add, that move for Carroll also hampered his progress and England career, he was ticking along nicely, learning his trade at the top level when bump, you're off to Liverpool son!!

Man utd paid £28m, chelsea paid £15m. He didn't make more than 70 starts in 8 seasons.

Torres has a World Cup to his name...I have a feeling he is shortly going to find his form and start scoring for fun.

Torres is a top player who will eventually find his form again, Carroll is a bit of an enigma, to be fair he could still come good! Thats why I'm agreeing with Joe and his choice of Steve Daley. I think Malcolm Allison signed him for Man City and if he had 1 good game for them its 1 more than I can recall. I forget what kind of fee was involved, only that it was a lot!

I personally think Liverpool signing Downing, Henderson and Carroll for about 75 million is by far the worst piece of business in ANY sport EVER!!!!!!!!!!

Daley, Davenport, Birtles, Robinson.
All from a similar era and all massive money signings who were woeful at their new clubs.

I believe that Kenny spending 35 million on Carroll, with only half a season of premier league experience was a massive waste of money and very poor management by the miserable Scotsman.

People saying jones and sidibe get a fucking grip! Sidibe was a free transfer and as done more for stoke city that Carroll at Liverpool and Torres at Chelsea will ever do! The same as jones! I bet Liverpool and Chelsea could get 12 goals out of their pair of miss fits!

2006, Shevchenko left Milan for Chelsea for £30.8 million 9 goals in 47 Appearances
£3.4M per Goal
2000 Chris Sutton Blackburn to Chelsea £10M 1 Premier league goal in 28 Appearances
£10M per goal
2011 Andy Carroll £30M Newcastle to Liverpool 4 Goals from 25 Appearances
£7.5M per goal so far
2011 Torres £50M Liverpool to Chelsea 3 Goals from 31 Appearences
£16M per goal so far
I always thought Chris Sutton was right up there but Torres is pushing him close.

I think Carroll will come good at Liverpool. He will never be a player capable of repaying the £35 million though.
