I think the game you are on about was against west brom.We won 3_2 ,and the 3rd goal was a fantastic volley.

I recall seeing Garth score 2 hattricks for Stoke: one against Blackburn 1978 and one against WBA 1979. However, no memories of a injured ref though

I'm sure I remember a home game in the mid to late 70's when the ref had to go off.
I think the ref got in the way of a stoke shot and was concussed. one of the liners went as ref and they asked across the tanoy if there was someone in the crowd who could run the line.
Did this happen or is my memory playing tricks on me?

Definitely the Blackburn game Mark, I was in the Boothen stand with my old man and a young Adrian Heath. My old man used to ref locally and went down when they asked for a replacement for the liner, he got there too late and somebody else went on instead. Geoff Scott scoring from the halfway line

The atmosphere at that game was brill, even the paddocks joining in the singing especially while the ref was being treated!
Can't remember that Crooks scored a hat trick though??? I'm sure Dave Gregory scored one, that Geoff Scott fluke and I remember Crooks smashed in the face by a clearance and the ball ending up in the net, but not a hat trick.

It was definitely a Crooks hat-trick against Blackburn, I remember it well.
I've also got a programme from the next home game with a picture of Garth holding up the match ball in the dressing room with Geoff Scott who scored the other goal.

Defo the Blackburn 4-2 game, it was my first game ever so remember it well.
Shame Crooks can't remember it though, I met him a few years ago and mentioned this game to him and the goal that hit him in the face and went in. He had no recollection of it.
Shows how much his time at Stoke meant to him!

Crooksy was my 1st Stoke idol, loved him when he was a Stoke player.I was at the WBA game when he scored his hat-rick.I think it was the first hat-rick i had ever seen a Stoke player score whilst being there myself in the ground. But the one goal that stands out above any other he scored at The Vic was in 1984/85 for Spurs.I still have nightmares about Barry Siddall to this day.

The goal that stands out in my memory was when we beat Derby 3-2 and Crooks got the winner,we were 2 up i think and then Gordon Hill scored a couple for Derby with Roger Jones having a mare and Crooks got the all important goal near the end.

Those are exactly the events that my Uncle described, I didn't want to elaborate on the tannoy announcement for a Linesman as you almost couldn't make it up !!
