Ahhh I see it now. When Kodak and Woolworths recently went under, people were marching in the street collecting and donating money to save them just like with Darlington FC weren’t they?
Oh no, that’s right, they weren’t.
You can have suckers like you and faceless bean counting twats like Scholes lecturing about football clubs being businesses but they way they form, the way they organise and the unparalleled loyalty of their customers make any comparison with a normal business entirely redundant.
People who justify what greedy clubs do with the ‘hey, the club is a business’ should be shot. No offence like.

I have a lot of time for Momo's argument here.
Football isn't like any ordinary business and the customer base can't be treated as such - those suggesting so are being incredibly naive in my opinion.
If I go to a restaurant and the meal they serve is rubbish, then I certainly won't return again. This example can be used for virtually any other business that has public customers.
If we go to watch our football team and the football they serve up is rubbish, we still return the following week and the following week and the following ...
A football club has a unique, captive customer base, very, very different from most businesses and such loyal customers should always be afforded the utmost respect, far more than you would expect a business to ordinarily do - taking those customers for granted or even (arguably) exploiting their loyalty would be foolish indeed.

momo patronise all you want mate but it doesn't change the fact that your persistence of finding ways to blame the club for the world's ills is getting even more tiresome than usual.you're a bit predictable to most on here nowadays, a bit like a sad, tired out cushion on the sofa that's gone flat and lost all it's life.just surprised that with your life attitude you're not up Boslem every weekend but given that you're a Londoner i'm guessing you're too busy sitting on your sofa complaining about "Your" team while you watch the highlights on MOTD.
Bless ya!

And what's your point? My point is that the relationship between a football club and it's customer base is (as Momo has said) very, very different to the relationship between virtually all other services industries or entertainment industries and their customers bases. Do you disagree with me then?

That’s not even debatable.
The relationship between a Football Club and its client base (i.e. the fans) is completely different to any other in the business world.
It IS still a business but you can’t just run it like a McDonalds or Apple where the customer is just a faceless number.

There is no denying that soccer is a very unique business howeve,r mmlovechild make a valid point. It's the team, brand scfc that we are addicted too. Many of us have supported through thin and thinner in the past 30 odd years and believe me i have been more vocal than most and taken actions against previous regimes (that peter coates fella) to force change however i always turned up to the majority of games home and away.
Brand scfc is now in a different world where money buys success in most cases, without it we would probably end up where we were 10 / 15 years ago. Look at Leeds, portsmouth, derby, leicester, forest etc, all clubs as big or bigger than ourselves who have a rich history in the premier league and have now fallen on harder times.
It's so important for the business side of scfc to florish and generate income to ensure our long term future in the top division, it's the only place to be.
Without Peter Coates (yes, him again) we wouldn't be here and wouldn't have had 4 successful years in the prem and guess what, he won't be around for ever.
There is a club called blackburn rovers, you might remember them, they had a waelth benefactor who pumped a large amount of money into the club and they won the premiership. Since his death (rip) his club has been on a downward spiral and now find themselves in turmoil on and off the pitch.
Scfc the team are punching above their weight at present and even thought the administration side don't always get it right and treat their customers in the correct way i do think on thw whole they are doing a good job. We have the stability and resources that we all craved just a short time ago so lets enjoy and support scfc the team and brand in what ever way we can.
Long may it continue.

Menorcasi from a sunbed in the med. ;D I don't think there's anything new there fella - people would have to be stupid to think that SCFC doesn't need to work financially as a business, I trust you're not suggesting that people are (stupid). However there's more than one way to skin a cat, isn't that what the discussion is actually about? Just because an idea makes money doesn't then mean that it's a good idea ... especially when you're dealing with such a unique customer base. If it was just about counting the cash, then the club would still be selling Platinum memberships right now wouldn't they? If any other business knew they could collect money for old rope then they would do. To be fair they didn't stop selling them until people started kicking off on here but the very fact that they have done, clearly shows that this isn't any ordinary business-customer relationship. I fundamentally disagree with the Platinum membership schemes but just because they raise (albeit very limited) revenue for the club, doesn't then make my argument automatically invalid ... it might indeed be invalid but if it is, it will be for other reasons than simply because the club makes money out of it.

From where I'm sitting all I saw was the club and the manger whipping up support for valencia away. They even waived the ridiculous travel form. Perhaps if they had done their homework they would have kep their powder dry and we would not be in this farcical situation.
The club have handled it very very badly and let down supporters.
The real sad thing is that we have 'supporters' defending it because 'football is a business'.

Customer loyalty of the kind seen in football is pretty unusual in the business world, however this doesn't make football not a business.
Stoke City creates hundreds of jobs for local people. Do you suggest it should try and run itself as anything other than a business would be ludicrous? What are we then, a charity? Try telling the people who turn up to work every day, and who's job it is to make SCFC run properly that football is not a business. Stoke City as an organisation does not turn a profit. It is the job[/i] of the top executives at the club to try and maximise all possible revenue streams. That doesn't mean that you cannot have good customer relations, this isn't a feature that's unique to football as a business.

Let's say we get through to the next round and play PSV receiving an allocation of about 1,400 tickets and the club decide to try and maximise all possible revenue streams (your words not mine), by making the entire allocation only available to people who book on their official planes - would you still be of the opinion that they were right to do so?
