I know it was a different team last night but it was the same old Pulis style of play.God knows what its like to watch the youth team. But my point is do you think last weeks victory over the worst team in the prem just a little respite over what could be a long hard struggle of a season for us?I suppose time will tell and Everton will be a good start.

Nothing up with the style of play providing of course we play with pace and power which is what we try to do.
Kiev were not fit to lace Stoke's boots in the second half and couldn't have complained had they got a thumping.

You could also say that Stoke were not fit to lace Kiev's boots in the first half. We were lucky not to be 2 or 3 down at half time.

The performance last night was dreadful....Diao was 2 seconds behind the pace at every ball. Good old Rory didnt want to run........even our SAVIOUR Palacios showed he is not the messiah we all hope he is. and at times we just stood with the ball looking around, that was the point where the crowd almost began to boo the team....and when I seriously considered leaving and watching in the pub!!!! If not for the last 20 minutes.......well....what would have happened? I know it was a second team...but by god the tactics were diabolical....seen that before somewhere....oh yeah last weekend.

Kiev is not a bad team!Palacios showed the ability to get behind the opponent's defence once which I haven't seen any of our other midfielders do for a while! Huth is back where he belongs, and Higgy and Ric will up their fitness! Good times to come I hope! ;D

No it was not the same style of play last night. First half - laborious tip tap crap. Second half - quick long balls and more urgency.

Yes, i think it was. I have serious concerns for the season because at the moment we arent good enought. Blackburn were awful, and most other teams playing us that day, would have turned us over. We look devoid of ideas, one dimensional and teams are finding it easier to come and play at the Brit. Our away form is dreadful and couple that with a loss in home form and it could well be a very long winter!!

Following on from a top 2 season in 148 years last time round.

We played the ball long at evert given opportunity 1st half and only got into the game second half when we pressed them on the ball. We were very poor last night and ok didn't think we were going to score as our crosses and throws weren't looking like getting us anything. Luckily Pennant came up with a moment of magic and we got the point and achieved our objective of qualification.

First half consisted of us trying to draw them out with a series of sideways passes in our own half. It didn't work (obviously). It didn't work in the Prem last season either. Let's hope we don't see any more of this passing crap ever again. It was like watching the England team trying to play a Continental style of football. Second half we just twatted the thing up the pitch and consequently achieved much better penetration. Putting Rory in the middle helped no end, as well.

There are still worrying signs that we are not at our best at present. To work well, Tone's system has be played with a high tempo pressing game with everyone knowing, and keeping to, their allotted tasks. When we drop off the pace, we look very ordinary.
Let's hope the two month break from Europe (Tone will surely pay little attention to the trip to Turkey now and rest as many as he can) will allow a settled team to develop and more time on the training ground to hone tactics and formation.

how can you a post a thread like this when we've just qualified for the last 32 in the Europa league ? unbeaten by the way.

My worry is the type of players we've got, we need pace, skill and a bit of trickery. Why did we sign Jerome when we could of had zaha. That will prove a massive mistake on a David Platt proportion.

I imagine because the poster is a little concerned at the standard of football that we are playing. We may have got a result yesterday, but we were poor from the off yesterday. Second half was an improvement, but in the first half we looked utterly clueless and weak. God knows how Tony believes that Salif still has something to offer, and Delap out wide is just baffling. The progress we have made in terms of results is fantastic, but I cannot agree with anyone who thinks that everything in the garden is rosey.

My view is that when Matthew Etherington plays well, Stoke play well
He didnt play last night, we got the result we needed - happy days

Far from think everything is rosey, however its the opposite of gloomy. Theres a post on here about people who dont deserve the success were having these past few years and its spot on. I agree we looked gash in the 1st half and you have to give kiev some credit "there only as good you let them be" People dont realise how good they are , they also knocked Man City last year. If you cant be happy and hopefull as a stoke supporter now then you may aswell call it a day.

I thought we were quite comfortable. They deserved their goal for the speed with which they broke but FFS who is it that is going through....little Stoke City or major experienced European Giants Kiev????
