As others have said, so very sad. Gary will always be remembered with respect both as a footballer and as a man. May he rest in peace.
With deep sympathy and condolences to all who knew him, and, especially to all his family who loved him

Yesterday afternoon I was watching '24 Hour Party People' (that I'd recorded off the TV a few weeks ago) and after the bit where Ian Curtis hung himself I stopped the film and went out to listen to 'Digital' (last song Joy Division performed live)
Half an hour later I put the TV on and found out that Gary Speed had hung himself
How strange and scary is that?
Gary Speed
RIP

Such desperately sad news. We may never understand why and my thoughts go out to his family.
Every time he moved club, I always thought that one team had lost something great and the other had gained something great. He was a model professional and a fine footballer. He had everything needed to succeed in management too.

Yesterday I found myself thinking about Robert Enke on several occassions. Today I hear about Gary Speed. Very sad indeed.

Still feeling very confused about yesterday's news, and can't imagine how Gary's family must feel today. These things can affect people very differently, and not to take anything away from those close to him - or indeed make this anything to do with Stoke, but wondered if we had any personel close to Gary Speed.
- Tony Pulis - fellow Welshman (possible relationship with him) - Jonathan Woodgate - former NUFC team mate - Thomas Sorensen - played for Sunderland when GS was in the north east with Newcastle
I may have missed more out - presumably Danny Collins, albeit out on loan, will have been affected by it as a member of Gary Speed's Welsh squad.
Likewise, he is a former Everton player and will have many friends at Everton still I presume, and as he played there I think there will be supporters and staff who felt close to him also.
I think the Everton match will be a very emotional occasion, and I hope those close to Gary can do him proud with a memorable tribute and performance to match. There will be planned tributes at Everton I suspect, and I really hope Stoke fans respect them properly.
RIP Gary Speed.

I'm still finding this whole thing to be very strange, how can someone appear on TV, and by all accounts appear to be of a sound mind, talking about the future (arranging games of golf!) laughing and joking, go on to hang themselves literally hours later ? i know depressed people can hide their feelings well, but usually there is at least an indication that's something is wrong, yet those around him didn't detect anything amiss.
Anyway, RIP.

Agreed and I always hope for a minute's applause rather than silence on these occasions. There's always some pond life with zero respect for anybody or anything ready to show their contempt for human decency...

Also, I know he doesn't play for us, but I know that Beattie and Speed were good mates at Sheff Utd, and their wives are very very close. I'm sure it's a huge loss to a lot of footballers and managers though. RIP Speedo, you'll be missed.

RIP, Gary. One of the good guys. Shocking news - the last thing I expected. Seemingly he had a glittering career ahead of him.
Condolences to his wife, children and all of his extended family.

Nobody - friends, fans, colleagues, media - seems to have had any idea of what he was going through. He needed help and nobody could give it to him... what a tragic loss.

Seems his closest friends ,wife are baffled as no signs of depression were ever evident ever. This needs a thorough investigation by the police and not just a gloss over by what it looks like. RIP Gary a true role model if ever there was one.

RIP Gary a true role model if ever there was one. There have been rumours as to why, that don't take too much digging around on the web to come across, but this isn't really the place for speculation (plus certain libel related matters could come into play). RIP Gary
