How terribly, terribly shocking.
Just had a minute's silence at Swansea Villa, which spontaneously turned into a minute's applause with chants of "one Gary Speed" - very emotional, Shay Given crying. Three of the Swans team are in the Wales squad, along with James Collins for Villa. Must be very hard for them to play today.

Devastating. Just had to ring my best mate and tell him the news, he worked under Speed at Sheffield United and couldn't speak highly enough of him. Shocking news. I worked for Sheffield Utd when he was there as a player and whilst I wouldn't claim to know the bloke personally, he came across as a nice guy and would always take the time to say hello and help you out when he could. R.I.P. Gary

That really is a shock, he seemed the last person you would have believed to have suicidal thoughts. His career in management couldn't be going better, seemed a really nice happy guy with a bright future.
Thoughts and prayers with his family and friends.

Football has lost a giant tonight. Top player, top pro and top bloke.
The 606 show tonight was a lovely tribute. Just listening to Savage talk about him whilst trying to hold back the tears was just heartbreaking.
Even before his death, I honestly had never heard a word against him - that's the mark of a top, top man.
It can become too easy to say "thoughts are with the family" but they well and truly are when something like this happens.
RIP Gary Speed

As someone who has no real 'links' to Gary Speed his passing today hit me like a juggernaut. I can't begin to imagine what a dark place he must have been in to take his own life and it is because he was so successful that the circumstances around his death were such a shock. Here was a man with so much to offer and yet he felt there was no other way out. It represents a personal tragedy for his family and friends and yet is a sad reflection on society as a whole that there was nowhere for him to turn to help resolve his problems. RIP Gary.
