That both CM scored in the same game? Its a bit of a collectors item. Good to see Whelan on the edge of the area to round off a great move.

I sure Kavanagh and Richard Forsyth scored in the same game. I haven't got any proof as I haven't looked in the record books but they both popped up with goals

I'd imagine when Gudjon was playing three in the middle with his wing back formation and we had O'Connor, Kavanagh and Bjarni in there. They got between 25-30 goals between them that year

I asked the same question after Rory scored yesterday. No one near where I sit knew the answer. If you asked when was the last time two central midfielders scored the FIRST TWO goals it might be an even harder question. Like lagwafis, I think it was probably in Gudjon's time as manager.

My mate asked this question after Whelan's goal yesterday and we flippantly came up with Gleghorn and Orlygson.
To be honest though, I bet we weren't that far off considering the dearth of midfield talent we've had since then!

Was it Russell and Clarke against Wolves in 2004? Or was Clarke back at left back by then?

I think you were right rob we probably had Hall and Halls as fullbacks with Clarkey CM...but not sure

Just checking, the Wolves game you mention, Dave Brammer was playing, so he would have been centre midfield with Russell
Halls and Hall were fullbacks
So Clarke must have played left midfield

So he was. Had blotted out Dave Brammer from my Stoke City consciousness I think.

Nearly found one
The 5-0 win over Norwich (28th October 2006)
3 midfielders scored that game (Hendrie, Chadwick and Russell)
HOWEVER Diao played 80 minutes of that game, so that doesn't count!

WOW!! I knew the binary season was bad, but there was 19 league games in a row that neither team scored more than 1 goal per game!!! 2004-2005

Another game were Clarke and Russell scored (6-3 loss away at Palace) but Clarke was playing left back

Fortunately I was living in Sheffield at the time and missed most of it. Small mercies and all that. People forget that Hendrie only ever played left mid for us.

Is this one??
Bradford away 2002 Boxing Day
We lost 4-2
Peteur Marteinsson and Karl Henry scored
I remember going to this game and missing Marteinsson's goal because it took ages to get through the gates
The midfield that day was Marteinsson, Henry, O Connor and Lewis Neal
One of Marteinsson or O Connor would have been on the wing that day

Did he play O'Connor wide right sometimes? Karl Henry and Marteinsson both played right back at times, don't know if he'd have played either of them right wing? Henry possibly?

DEFINTELY GOT IT!!!
Saturday 3rd November 2001
Swindon 0 -3 Stoke
Brynjar Gunnarsson(28) Chris Iwelumo (65) James O'Connor (86)
The midfield five were
Bjanri, Brynjar, O Connor, Neal and Hoesktra
OOOHH NNNOOOOOO, Hoesktra went off at half time and Andy Cooke game on
Does that mean O Connor went out to the left
Looking at it, we only started Iwelumo up front so Cookie probably went up front as we went 4-4-2 or Hooky played up front and Lewis Neal was on the left
Anway, its look like James O Connor and Brynar Gunnarson should have been playing in centre midfield

He has a really bad cruciate injury and by the time he made it back (a good 10-12 months) Gudjon had signed Bjarni in his position which I guess sounded the death knell on his Stoke Career, I sat in front of his dad when he made his home debut and he was shedding tears, very touching

Nope right winger mate, always was but was equally able with both feet so did get swapped onto the left occasionally....Played for England school boys quite a few times....actually went onto have a trial with Brum after we released him who were in the top flight at the time I think....When Bruce was there.

Good work padders! I had a feeling it must have included Kav as he was probably our most prolific scorer from CM.

Whelan should score more goals than he does, he is a really good striker of the ball.
