Lets have a break from all of this bleakness!
Mine as got to be the 1982 World cup in Spain!
It had everything. A very entertaining Brazil side, England score the fastest World cup finals goal ever. When had one player nearly decapitated in a semi final, Rossi came straight out of prison to be the top scorer, Northern Ireland beat the hosts and it was a good world cup final game to round it all off!!!

1970 - best Brazilian TEAM I've seen, Gerson unforgettable 1954 - superb Hungarians undone by complacency against unfancied West Germans 1958 - first sight of Pele plus Garrincha, Didi, Vava - different world/planet to England

Italia 90 was the first world cup I can properly remember (I was 12) the opening game was ace, the new breed of team from Africa beating the then world champions and the game had the most blatent red card you are likely to see !! It had everything.... except a winning England team ! Although I am now nearly 34 and that is still the nearest we have come in my lifetime !

1974 in Germany. Holland in their prime, rolling over everyone in their sights, Cruyff player of the tournament by a mile. Undone by poor tactics in the final.
1982. Brazil were fantastic going forward and defended like West Brazil of old, England overturning France, Keegan missing a sitter that would have sent us on to the next round, NI beating Spain.

we need to beat Spain 2.0 however the way the game was if KK had scored (simple chance) a 2nd seemed likely
are England the only team to get through the (1st) group stage & go out undefeated?

Italia 90-I was 22 and watched every England match propped up against the bar in the Woodman in Hanley.
Happy days-in fact the best of days.

The trouble with the last 2 world cups is that the group stages are full of teams desperate not to lose and not looking to win any games so hence the boredom.
Italia 90 and Mexico 86 for me also but it may well be blinded by England performing well?......I enjoyed ( and attended ) France 98 also

94 cos it was the first one I remember (I was 8), though there are photos of me watching 86 (I would have been 8/9 months old) and 90 (4), but I don't remember those obviously. 2006 was the best one of the past decade, 2002 was shit, 2010 was ok but the vuvuzelas ruined most matches.

Another vote for 1990. Amazing how magic those memories are even though pundits say that was a dire World Cup!
Gazza, Lineker, penalties, Roger Milla, the Colombia keeper, Maradona crying.

Loved Italia 90, but we only look back at it fondly because England did well and got to the last four.
The tournament itself was one of the poorest ever.
For me Mexico `86 was my favourite.

Partly true - but for a generation Italia 90 was the last World Cup England were involved in while we were kids. I was too young really to remember Mexico 86, we didn't qualify for USA 94 and I was a cynical git by the time France 98 came around. Added to that it was the last World Cup prior to the Premiership era, when footballers were real men.

Personally, I like the new one by FIFA. Jules Rimet has history but the one with the hands holding the ball is a really nice trophy

Italia 90. Also enjoyed getting up early to watch every match of World cup 94. The Spain v Korea match always sticks in my mind. Also when the Irish got Knocked out by the Dutch i was distraught as hell.

1982 and 86 are my favourites.
As said above, 82 was a strange format with the second stage going to a round robin.
What these two World Cups did have though was some all time classic matches, plenty of spectacular goals and the top players in the world at the time playing at their peak.
Got to say, I think a lot of people look at Italia 90 through rose tinted glasses due to England getting to the semi finals. The tournament was pretty poor as a whole. I can't remember many great matches of any note that really stand out and finished with a appalling final between West Germany and Argentina which has to be one of the worst games of football I have ever seen.

KewStokie, agree Germany Holland..."74
watched it in black n white on our Redifusion rental TV at my mum n dads....I was 10....
sat their in my boots, shinpads, strip, and with my leather laced casey which i had spent all day "dubbing", along with my boots
clear memories of pure football atmosphere.. air horns non stop, local rivalry, skill, tackles when proper tackles were allowed... the whole match is a must buy for younger ones to reflect on how good the olden days REALLY were

France '98. Just because I was 8 and it was the first World Cup I watched.
I was in hospital for some of it and bet a fella in my ward that Brazil would win it. Shows what I know!
