I reckon a good deal of our success last season was down to the impact Ethers & Pennant had , we`re a side that thrives on a good deal of service from the wings and this year for whatever the reason (poss injury & fitness and more worryingly a seeming drop in motivation!) it is isn`t there. Both of them would cut inside, beat defenders (and yes, out dribble opponents) and this season we`re seeing it less and less. If we are signing new heads in January I think we should consider a bit of competition for Jermaine & Matty.

It was 20 minutes before Matty's name was even mentioned on BBC Radio Stoke! It was posted that Stoke are interested in a player in Holland but not a winger yet another striker! We will soon have a team of 5 strikers + 6 CHs!

Without them we are making very few chances from open play. With two defensive midfielders we cannot build up play at all.

Etherington hasn't had a good game since he was stretchered off against Wolves. If he's not fit, he shouldn't play. A reliable winger is essential in January

The way we play we are MUCH better when we have both wingers playing and playing well. When only one winger is playing we lose a lot of the impact because the one winger gets more closely marked.
In the next window we must bring in another winger as cover. Ideally, I'd like to see us bring in a left footer who can play on either flank AND bring Marshall back to give him some game time and see how he does at the top level.
I agree Pennant looked good when he came on - but he'd have looked even better if Ethers had been there and fit, on the other wing.

What success was that? We didn't win anything and we finished lower in the league than the previous year. Just shows how powerful the local media is in brainwashing fans. Before you say it! I know we got to a FA Cup final. This was a major distraction from the decline we actually have made.

Pennant has been great in his last two performances

You hear a lot of posters say how important it is to have decent fullbacks to support the wingers, this is very true but it also works the other way. I just wonder how much Wilson can improve if Matty can get his arse into gear

I know we got to a FA Cup final. This was a major distraction from the decline we actually have made. I've read some crap on here, but this beats the lot. How can you say that we've declined? The football we're playing now and towards the end of last season is unrecognisable from this time last year. I agree Etherington has not played well since Wolves, but Pennant's playing well, fair enough his crossing isn't quite what it was last season, but he does so much more, apart from JW he works harder than anyone else. I wish both wingers would have more confidence to take the ball into the box and shoot occasionally, instead of looking to cross when there's no-one there to receive it.

If they don't start improving soon (pennant has done alright this season, but we need both fully up to spped), i don't know what we are going to do. Change of tactics? I dare say what we could change to.
