It's good he's getting some confidence and fitness back after his injury. Will be a big decision from Pullis whether to allow him to stay there after this loan ends, or comes back to Stoke and prove he's good enough to step up and play in the Prem. I was hoping he'd get a chance in a few of the Europa games before Megson got him.

Currently living in Cumbria so I went to the game last night. I work with Carlisle fans who rave about Marshall and he got a decent reception from the crowd last night. Local radio also gave him a hell of a build up too. He seemed a big favourite with the travelling Sheffield fans too.
The game itself was a cracker, Carlisle played some terrific stuff yet were just holding on to a 3-2 at the end despite being against 10 men. To be honest Sheff Wed were pretty poor, Lewis Buxton was decent but Jimmy O'Connor was not involved at all and seemed lost, stuck out on the left wing. The rest of Wednesday's midfield were clueless too. So how did this game end so close?
Ben Marshall. He scored a really good solo goal and troubled the Carlisle defence every time he got the ball. He is two footed and takes a pretty good corner. At this level he seems to have a fair turn of pace too. He did get himself the wrong side of his opposite number in defence a few times, but this seemed less to do with lack of effort and more to do with Sheff Wed's poor organisation. So I would say that Marshall is a winger who will work hard going forward and back.
Now before anyone starts thinking we've got a real world beater here, a word of caution. This was my first Div 1 game since we got promoted. We have come a hell of a long way! Phsically the Prem is way faster, the players are stronger and fitter and space is much harder to find. At times Ben could not get on the ball at all and he seemed unsure how to get into the game(again this was probably due to the performance of his midfield colleagues), he will need to improve his play when he is not in possession. He also has a long throw. However its miles away from Rory's and nowhere near as good as Ryan Shotton's( more like Salif's). Lots of improvement needed there before we see it used at Stoke.
I would like us to bring Marshall back in January. He has got talent and a good attitude, and could offer cover to our wide players. We won't know if he can make the step up required until we give him a go. A few sub appearances and cup games would reveal alot. Personally I think we should have him back for a month or so, give him few chances then try to get him a loan to a decent Championship club for while.
We may have a future first team player in Ben Marshall. Probably not this season though.

I have some mates here in Sheffield that are desperate for him to stay with Wednesday, but they all agree that he's at least Championship level. They're hoping that Pulis might do Megson a favour and extend the loan until the end of the season. I can't see them getting promoted without him.

The fact that we haven't already extended his conttract does not bode well. As he is under 24 we would get a fee for him.

Would be a shame for us not to at least give him a run in a couple of cup games, see what he can do for Stoke. I've heard nothing but good things about him from most people.

"The one cloud on the Hillsborough horizon is the attention that Marshall has drawn, not so much from the opposition but clubs higher up the scale who will wonder whether they can acquire him when his loan to Wednesday expires in January." My thoughts, exactly . Let's hope TP doesn't want to offload him because he still thinks that Rory and Deano are adequate cover for the wings.

Marshall is years off the Prem - IF he is ever good enough. Does he challenge in the air, is he strong enough to hold off players, does he tackle, can he chase back, does he keep the team shape? The answers will all be found out at Wednesday where one of TP's best mates can keep an eye on him and ensure he is learning our style of football. Let's hope he is a star of the future, but to drop him in the first team now could be a repeat of Stuart Roberts. Ryan Shotton is way ahead of him in terms of Prem football and he had a bit of a 'mare on Thursday against a decent top team.

TP was talking about putting him in the 25 this season however his leg break meant TP decided he needed to play games/build fitness up
imho even reluctant-to-blood-youngsters TP will put him in the 25 sooner than 2 years

Don't worry its part of marches issues. He takes Pulis's most frustrating aspects, magnifies them and claims there a virtue in his little fishing trips. Even march isn't stupid enough to really believe that !
