Seeing as we're still fairly new to this ole Premier League business, I'm always focused on us getting past the 40 point mark and making sure we're here for another season of top flight football. I reckon that the three teams that get relegated this season will each get 36 points or less - so 37 points and above will equal survival this year.
With this in mind, how many points do you lot think will be required for safety this season?

It's difficult to predict really, the required points/goal difference total to beat the drop from the 3 seasons we've been here so far have been:
2010-11 - 39 points with a -20 goal difference
2009-10 - 30 points with a -39 goal difference
2008-09 - 34 points with a -18 goal difference
Quite a wide range of totals really, I certainly don't think we'll have anything like the 2009-10 season this season because the promoted teams look like they're going to compete well this season, it's not totally out of the question that all 3 of them could beat the drop.
I'd guess at around the 38-41 point mark this season.

I think you could well be right in your assessment.last season there were no stand out relegation fodder teams in the bottom three as in previous seasons,i always worried that even west ham would eventually come good! This year, imho, there are several teams who could severely struggle to reach ,say,38 points.

36/7 should be the regulation point this season. Can't even see blunderland or ARSEnal getting past that

I can see 5/6 teams that will be seriously involved in a relegation fight to the final game of the season. This year will be a very close Premier League.

Close again so above 40 would be good , but seriously I don't think once we sort out our best team and get key players, Etherington,Pennant and Palacios fit that we should be involved. If we are questions will need to be asked even allowing for cup committments.

I'd rather look upwards than downwards. I predict a 'bigger' club dropping this season - I'm meaning a Blackburn or a Bolton for example. But it won't be a Stoke. As I commented on other similar threads, we WILL be top ten or, to use that awful cliche "there or thereabouts."

As we all know the teams at the foot of the table have 3/5 points out of 7 games. If the trend continues the lowest team may finish with less than 32 points. The premier league have 13 teams who are as good as each other, it going to be another tight season. I see stoke getting above 48 points and I have no fear of relegation.

GoBoks Newcastle seem in for a really good finish ( top 7 ) but 13/14 teams of the same ability makes the league competitive. Therefore points needed my not be high.

Lot of negative shite talked here. It's far too early in the season to start making assumptions... or indeed worrying

More points than three other teams Assuming no club gets 10 points deducted for going into 'administration'! As for Binndy's comments about Newcastle, MoTD keeps raving about them. But they've only played one big club and even that is Arsenal! Against Wolves they had more luck in one match than most teams get in a season! Massively over-rated and over-hyped!

I am desperately hoping that we arent even looking at this scenario come January/February but alas results against Swansea and Sunderland lead me to think I shall still be chasing the old 40 down

If you look at the final table last season, you could almost say the mid-table teams occupied positions from 8th to 19th.
If we'd lost to Liverpool and Arsenal at home, which wouldn't have been unthinkable, we'd have been papping our pants on the final day.
If we'd got the extra 12 points or so that we were robbed of at the start of the season and seen off Wigan on the last day, we'd have been looking at an amazing league position.
I suppose what I'm saying is, don't take survival for granted. It could be very close at the end.

I think once the excitement wears off, Norwich and Swansea will find it hard to get 40 points.
I'm not convinced about Wigan or Blackburn's ability to get there either, or QPR if they have a couple of injuries.
We'll get our usual 45-47 points ish, and finish 9th-13th.

I'm not convinced about Wigan or Blackburn's ability to get there either, or QPR if they have a couple of injuries. Once we get through the christmas fixtures the promoted teams start to struggle, Wolves could really struggle this season as they've basically hung on by the skin of their teeth since they gained promotion. There may not be a team with relegation written all over them like a Portsmouth or a West Ham this season, it will be incredibly tight down there! Just hope that Stoke can get more points away from home this season as obviously that's what will propel us to the 40pt mark a lot quicker.

I think once the excitement wears off, Norwich and Swansea will find it hard to get 40 points. we have been unlucky to face these two away so early on given our early home games and post European fixtures not a lot has gone our way fixturewise this year and I'm just glad we have as many points as we have

I'd say 36 points will be enough this year. There's a lot of teams that will not give many points away to the lower sides this year Man U, Man C, Chelsea, Liverpool, Spurs and potentially Arsenal. So its a case of how many points from 30 games. I think 36 will be enough this year.
