a couple of swipes across the elbows with my trusty old Ray Reardon snooker cue (just to stop him using his arms). then whilst waiting for the fuzz to arrive both hands are going in the toaster...it would be the only time he would want the police to hurry up and get there.

If somebody goes out to break the law and steal or rob and attack people... they put themselves outside the normal rules of society, if they get hurt or killed in the process that is the risk they take.
Law abiding citizens should be able to defend themselves without fear of prosecution.

If someone breaks into your house....and starts punching you, and you grab a knife from your drawer to defend yourself and stab them to death - then I would say, yes you can?

Fine line between self-defense and assault/murder. Problem is at what point do you realise in the dark, scared out you wits and fearing for you or your family's safety the difference between the two. Answer to it would be to get a massive dog, would scare more out of them than a baseball bat!
