Went to see an american football (pretty sure the 49ers were one of the teams) game at the old wembley many moons ago (when it became popular through ch4). Bored off of my tits! I didn't think it was possible to stretch a one hour game to 3! Far better watched in front of a telly, with replays and adverts! Sorry for that CD, hope you have a good time!

Nah, won't go until the Ravens come. i kept saying i wouldn't go until the lions came, but this year i figured i'd go no matter. the lions will never give up a home game to come here anyway. plus i quite liked tampa last season. best of all though...i get to boo jay cutler ;D would just be good to go see an NFL game in real life. it's not like i only watch lions games on TV, so doesn't really matter who's playing. luckily, this year they're both pretty decent teams. BTP - i'm going to guess they'll show the replays on the big screens at wembley (the advert breaks are the worst part about watching on TV!!)

The problem with American football is that the ball is in play for an unbelievably small amount of time. The whole 'event' takes three hours, but the ball is only in play for 11-13 minutes. The rest of the time, you're watching a bunch of fat men in tights chatting to each other.

I can't wait to get my tickets sorted tomorrow morning, mainly for the same reason as you Carlos... booing Jay Cutler! Haha! I've also started to develop a soft spot for the Lions as well so I'd love it if they came over here in the next year or two because they're developing into a pretty tasty looking team. Suh and Fairley together is a scary prospect!

I used to feel like that Jonah, but once you make the effort to fully understand the rules and objectives of the game it is a very entertaining and incredibly tactical sport to follow. The way that the whole NFL league is run with team salary caps and the "draft" system which lets the worst teams in the league get first dibs on the best young players from the colleges really puts the Premier League to shame. It keeps things fresh every season with all teams capable of beating each other and it stops the situation we have in this country where just a select few teams have all of the money and ultimately get their hands on the best players.
The biggest problem with following the NFL is that it makes you realise just how corrupt English football is and clubs like Stoke will never have a shot at winning the league as long as the organising bodies allow the big clubs to continue in the way that they are.

Frode - while the draft system they have in all four major US sports is a fair way of redressing the balance, it only works because the of the closed league system they have in the US. If the league had promotion/relegation and an open 'pyramid' like we have here, then they couldn't have the draft.
Unfortunately, the way this closed system works means teams don't belong to a city, but to a 'franchise'. This means a team can suddenly bugger off and move to another city. LA is expecting to get two of the current teams to move here.
I'd rather fix the open league system that has resulted in inequality throughout the football leagues around the world, than have an American system just for the sake of a draft.
As for the game, I actually watch it a bit here, but it could never be as entertaining as watching football.

Tickets sorted, near the front of the top tier not too far from the half way line, sadly on the Buccs sideline though so no Cutler abusing for me :-(

Apparently the North side is Bears and the South is Buccs. I'm in the top tier on the sideline towards the southwest corner.

Anybody watch the Packers Saints game last night? Absolute cracker to get the season going! The 108 yard kick-off return for a touchdown was stunning and then the dramatic goal line defensive standoff to see out the game. I really don't get how people find it boring!

I really don't get how people find it boring! fell asleep half an hour before kick off. gutted! TD returns are always good. in fact, any long run to score is pretty good to watch. desean jackson last year had a few, but this was my favourite just for the cheek of it ;D i'm not too fussed about people that don't like a certain sport, because i'm sure there are some sports out there that even i can't get into for various reasons. most people usually just moan about it either because they don't know the rules, or because of its "stop/start" nature (even if they like cricket) and therefore think the ball should constantly be in play/moving. but how often to we chant "BORING" at teams that just fanny about passing it to each other in their own half not doing anything useful? at least in american football it's constant attack minded play when the ball is in play.

At least he didn't throw that one away on the line! ;D The video of last night's is here: www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d82211010/article/packers-cobb-ties-nfl-record-with-108yard-kickoffreturn-td?module=HP11_headline_stack I love it how he gets flipped but lands on his feet and carries on going! If people have given the sport an honest chance and still don't like it then fair enough but the thing with American Football is that people just get annoyed by it without even attempting to understand and enjoy it and yet they still feel compelled to come onto threads like these and tell fans of the sport how they feel about it. If it really was as bad as they think it is then it wouldn't be so bloody popular! More fool them for missing out on quality sporting entertainment I say.

I used to love watching it and just lost some interest in it cos the Dolphins are now shit!Though I may try again now I have skysports. But the game I went to at wembley was one of THE most boring experiences I've ever had. There is so much NOT happening and I came away so dissappointed. Having said that, each to their own and I hope you all enjoy your day at wembley! I'd be interested to know what you thought.

Haha it's amazing how many Dolphins followers in the UK say the same! They all fell in love with them in the late 80's due to Channel 4's regular coverage of them and the genius that was Dan Marino, then there was a spell where the game wasn't shown at all over here and now it's back again the Dolphins completely suck and the fans are all like "What the f*ck happened to my team?!" (Suggested read: forum.nfluk.com/showthread.php?t=83762)It definitely takes a lot of patience to watch a game live though, even on TV. I've taken to recording games and then starting to watch about an hour after they've started so that I can skip through all the stoppages and catch up with the live footage by the end of the game. The best way to cope with actually going to live matches is to embrace the American sports fan culture and have as many beers, hotdogs and nachos etc as possible! ;D

The first game I watched was a superbowl in the 80's when The Dolphins were there and I just picked them. They lost in that too! But I stuck to following them and I think the general popularity in the game went down during the 90's (over here) and I never picked it up again. Probably due to the fall off with tv coverage too. Think I would need a copious amount of beer to sit through another live match I believe baseball is equally as boring (though I've never been a game) but yet has that same drinking and eating culture about it (someone correct me if I'm wrong!).

If you ever get the oppertunity to watch a game over in the states, Baseball, NFL, the atmosphere is awesome - even pre-season games have that same electric razz-a-ma-tazz.....

Believe me, baseball and to an extent NFL games aren't always thrilling things to go to. Baseball is normally the equivalent of a third division football game (oh, and I love baseball, and love going to watch it) Here's a picture of me and my little lady about a month ago at the Baby day at the Cincinnati reds
