I was speaking to a football agent at work today, and the subject of whats your job (i work in business 2 business) came up.
Asked him what he thought of Stoke.
His reaction. "a football agents nightmare"
Upon this i asked why. He said because of a) our location, b) style of play and c) our manager.
He said, as a neutral he likes Stoke, they play to their advantages and why shouldnt they. But in terms of getting players, we will always struggle.
He said because the perception that stoke like to get the ball forward as quick as possible to strong powerful strikers, to feed it to the wings, players think that they ball is going to come back at them a lot quicker than a team like WBA where they would get more time on the ball.
This is backed up by our stat of 3 seasons in prem and only one game above 50% possesion.
Number 2, the location, Stoke is not a big city. Players want to be in Manchester or London. He said even Birmingham based teams would struggle to sell their location to a player. He said even though stoke is only a 40 minute drive to manchester, players dont see it this way.
Number 3, the manager. He said players are afraid to TP. Not as a person but the fact that he wants atheletes in his team. He said the perception players get is that its fitness before the football. Again, with players who like to play with the ball at their feet, they believe that being a fit a racehorse should not take priority over their footballing skills.
I asked him then about our wingers. He said he liked the pair of them, and, they could play in many prem clubs and said Stoke were lucky to have them, but on the flip note, how many teams were actually prepared to take a chance on them.
He also said the Joey Barton rumour suprised him, but, would be fantastic for Stoke, as, it would allow the ball to be played through midfield to the front men, but, again followed with the statement that he will end up in London due to location.
He also mentioned one last thing, loyalty. Players will never be loyal to clubs no more. As much as we believe they would, and they tell us they are, they will not. He said most agents always look for the best deal for themselves before there players and bend their ears until they get what they want.
Nothing ground breaking in this guys, but my first experiance with a football agent. Seemed a pretty sound sort, but then again, could of been Sonko's rep!

Fitness and commitment should come before skill everytime. Team spirit doesn't come from some fancy Dan whinging about not getting in the team because he's shit in training.

Location? Aldeley Edge has more footballers per square mile than anywhere else in the country and it's a 30 minute drive away. No-ones asking new signings to live on Dividy Road for fucks sake..............

We're right next to the favourite haunt of the footballist, Chesire.
Surely even the most spacktarded, gurning bellend would realise this? Even if he was thicker than Joe Cole.

Surely our style (to use wingers all the time) would actually be attractive to someone like SWP, and Crouch, Roddellaga etc

Don`t agree with the location issue either. Most of our players live in the same plush south cheshire suburbs as both Manchester clubs` players aswell as Liverpool`s. If its good enough for them, its good enough for our players!!!
Your agent friend makes it sound like they will have to live in a two up two down on Coalville (no offence to anyone who lives there, its nice now).

I think it sounds fair to be honest. We may love our S-O-T but it certainly doesn't attract anybody else does it. Its not full of expensive fashion shops and places to be seen for the wags.

None of our players live in Stoke mate (maybe mama). In fact, they dont even live in the same county as Stoke.

They don't have to live here though do they? How many of the current side live round here? Rich man's playground Alderley Edge is just up the road, Manchester, Birmingham, Nottingham, Liverpool etc aren't far away either.

Nobody thinks that though, I wouldn't expect a Premier League footballer to live in Stoke. But as Prestwich says WAG central is a half hour drive away, it really shouldn't be an issue!

Right, I'm not arsed if you believe me or not, that was my experiance talking to a football agent through work.
I asked him questions and he replied. I thought I would share an insight into what goes through an agents mind, as, lets be quite fucking honest, they control everything of player, right down to women their dick pokes!
Location, yes, Stoke is a good location, I think what he was getting at was the fact their training at Clayton Woods (which he gave a mention to as being fanastic) but its not in the location that Carrington is, even though they finish at 2!
I thought our style of football was good to attract players, but he said not for a footballing CM. What am I supposed to do, call him a stupid cunt?! Don't need a P45 for that.
He gave me an honest insight into what makes footballers tick, but you shoot people down for telling you?! Don't be a bunch of keyboard warriors, quick to judge. But hey, you guys are all in the know!
I apologise for sharing my experiance!

I think style of play comes waaaaaay down the list of priorities for footballers compared to wages, prospects of success, chances of regular football and location, among others.

Sounds a bit like all that is your own thoughts and opinions dressed up as the talk of a mythical agent to give it some sense of credibility....

Do you look down on people who work there? Are they not good enough to speak to other people? Or are you attempting to be funny, but really, just end up looking a cock! I told you what I had been told. Whether you think its me making it up and believe it, you decide.

Sounds very feasible to me hence why we should be looking abroad as the perception of our club may be better. We should also take a chance lower down the league like Jordan Rhodes, Zaha etc ass we've missed others like Dale Jennings, Mackail Smith, Scott Loach all who look to have a decent future.

To be fair to the OP most of that shit does sound like the kind of drivle that would come out of an agents mouth. We aren't a fashionable team and one that doesn't pay over the top wages. The agent probably didn't want to sound like a greedy prick so made up other reasons rather than just saying "money. they don't give me enough money." I think it's been kind of unfair abuse on the poster, atleast he isn't claiming to be ITK or that rodders will definately be signed by 5 days ago...

You know some people on here won't give people a chance. Just because they didn't speak to the agent or you maybe aren't one of the self proclaimed " in the know" people, you have to be making it up. The reason for this is because there are so many people who spend all there time on the oatcake in search of gossip, stories and insight that when they actually come across something that might be the truth they simply can't believe it. What is the point of spending your time on here looking for some insight when all they do is disbelieve everything that's said. Is there any point to coming on the forum when obviously everything is bollocks. I for one thank you for the information as it seems a perfectly reasonable assumption by the agent.
