...our transfer policy. We leave most of our present buying 'till 4pm on X-mas Eve - hoping what we want to buy is in the sales. Well sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes you get the bargains. Sometimes you have to pay full price (or more). Sometimes what you wanted has gone and you're left calling at the petrol station on the way home (and getting a Sonko, Sores, Tongue....) ...and sometimes you go home with nothing.

But then manages to find a diamond ring in the packaging of the fanbelt, and a pearl stuffed into one of the flowers.

Not really an appropriate metaphor, unless you think TP is going to suddenly, on deadline eve, remember it's deadline tomorrow and stagger out to get the presents. He's actually researching, and making offers, to all the shops which stock the presents he wants, and he's got loads of other people on the case too. Unfortunately the shops, and the presents themselves, don't want to sell at post christmas knock down prices whereas at 11.59 on christmas eve... What's annoying is that Tonges can't be taken back after three years if they're not working
