Bego – 6.5 – didn’t have much to do and caught everything he could. Didn’t dominate his area like we needed though. Wilson – 6 – poor first half but better second. His passing was the worse I’ve seen from him in a long time. Yes it’s fine bringing the ball inside when you’re a full back and pinging a cross field pass, put not when it goes into touch every friggin time. Huth – 7.5 – best performance at right back. Only got done once (and then took his man out and was lucky not to get booked). Defended as solidly as Huth always defends. Woodgate – 8 - A great debut. Showed class. Shawcross – 8 – dominated. Snuffed out most of their threats. Deano – 7.5 – Worked so hard to snuff out their attacks. Little going forwards though (as you’d expect). Whelan – 7.5 - Pretty much the same as Deano. Matty – 6 – Poor – suffered with his injury. Passing lacked conviction and never wanted to take on his man. Jermaine – 6 – Offered next to nothing going forwards but worked hard defensively. Suffered a horrible challenge in the first half which may have affected him. Walters – 6.5 – ran hard but never linked up. Again, suffered a horrible challenge in the first half which may have affected him. Kenwyn – 6 – Was pretty absent in the second half (although he had absolutely no support). Got no protection from the ref.
Salif – 7 – did what Salif does: sat in front of the back 4 and protected. Shotton – 8 – ran hard and gave us an outlet. Unlucky the goal wont be given to him. Pugh – 6 – did he touch the ball? Just a mention for the ref: very poor. How did we manage to get more bookings than the Spit? Matty got booked for taking a free kick (was it for taking it too quickly or slowly?) while some of their challenges and play acting often went unpunished (the collapse to try and get a penalty in the second half was just an embarrassment).

That'll do for me too although Salif getting 7 is a bit bemusing as it suggests he did something well. He didn't do anything and an actual "sitting Salif in front of the back 4" would have been as effective

Agree with that, though as much as i like Wilson i think i would struggle to give him above a 3 for tonight. His passing really was that poor. What the hell do we teach our players in training.
Next meet the manager, i'm going have to ask Tone about our passing. It seems even if we got Scholes here in his prime we would soon have him passing it into touch!
And why do our keepers stay on the line so much. When Bego first come he came for crosses and i thought that fuck for that, a keeper than dominates his area and helps out his defence. Then, Stoke get hold of him and he stays on his line for every cross!! What does our goalkeeping coach do?

I thought he worked hard and covered well (especially for Wilson who I thought had a bit of a dodgy outing.) I'd have Rory ahead of him but he didn't have a bad game (and he set up the goal!)

bego 8 looks solid huth 8 but hope pullis isnt going to start playing him there to accomdate woody woody 8 didnt give em a sniff shawcross 8 likewise wilson 7 full of energy but loves the crossfield long pass which comes off once in four whelan 7 good game from glen whitehead 7 ran his nads off ethers 7 looked more likely than anyone to unlock their defence pennant 6 not reached last seasons levels yet, perhaps a fitness issue jones 7 led the line well, david speedie had a point on setanta saying he needs to time his jumps better walters 6 needed to get closer to jones at times
subs: diao 6 steadied the ship pugh 6 likewise shotton 8 actually looks pretty effective as a striker, did in the first leg too. Swung the momentum back our way at a crucial stage

bego- 7, didn't really have much to do huth- 8, probaly his best game at RB, superb! shawcross- 8.5, exellent tonight cut out alot of their attacks woodgate- 8, exellent debut tonight wilson- 6.5, poor first half got better second half but passes were not the best pennant- 7.5, didn't really have much of the ball but still played well whelan- 7, kept the ball well whitehead- 7, kept the ball well and cut out some of their passes ethers- 7.5, put in a couple of crosses looked lively after cracking his rib. KJ- 7.5 kept the ball well and got alot of throws walters- 8, had a couple of runs at their defence and caused problems
shotton- 8, looked very lively, helded the ball well and put the hajduk defender under pressure for the own goal. diao- 7.5, defended well when he came on pugh- 6, can't really remembering him touching it.
