Hello, I'm a student doing my final year dissertation and and doing some research into the role the football clubs in our identities. I've created a questionnaire to collect some views and opinions and would really appreciate if you gave it a go. If you have anything else to say about what the club means to you or anything else mentioned you can write it here. Also, as this is the first place I've posted it, there might be a couple of glitches so if you find any please let me know. Thanks very much. www.surveymonkey.com/s/9TQRF95

Well I would watch a Stoke match before doing anything, put Stoke before family and friends and would hate to see the day I leave the earth and to never be able to watch Stoke city again.

done your survey for me stoke is a get away from reality. sounds gay but when im down the brit i dont think of work stress, or any other problem im just in my eliment loving everybit of it. and when im not down the brit im either looking at videos on youtube or on here which gets me excited for the next game. ive not been a stoke fan all my life so i wont be as passionate as some of the guys on here about old stoke players and the viccy ground i only started watching stoke when i was in high school 2002 and could get a paper round to pay for my tickets. but for me pulis is making history in the years that ive followed stoke and now im apart of that history. in 30 years time i can tell my grandkids about the roar of the potters at the brit vs leicester and the pitch envasion and the sea of red&white . i can tell them about the experience of seing stoke in the fa cup at wembley. ill be able to tell them of the great fuller who in a few years time will be talked about as a stoke legend. stoke means alot to me but unlike the guy above that said he puts stoke before his family i wont do that my family will always be first no matter what

Stoke means everything. if ever we do anything, family related parties....etc I always say "but what about Stoke?" I suppose it's means everything to me because of my dad, from sitting watching us at the Brit for the first time in 1997-1998 too us both watching us get promoted, then watching us play our first European game for however many years it is. Everything Stoke related is with my dad. Which is why It means everything too me.

Just had a look at the survey. As usual, nonsensical questions that I can't answer because there is no choice that I can sensibly make. Surely, if you want people to complete a survey, there has to be a 'None of these' option for all questions.

Thanks very much. www.surveymonkey.com/s/9TQRF95Can you let us know what you are studying and what your dissertation is about? The reason I ask is twofold. First I am genuinely interested. And second, there is an identical request on a Liverpool forum - from "Scotsfan". The only "glitch" I can think of (apart from the "none of the above" option) is the fact that messageboards are a self selecting sample. Virtually everyone on here would say that they took SCFC with their mother's milk. The same would apply to pretty much any club's forum. So you will get a very skewed range of responses. I imagine you know all this, but it is another reason why I wd be interested to hear the background / context.

Thanks everyone!
I'm studying human geography and according to my plan "The proposed dissertation will investigate the role of football clubs in the construction of the identity of their fans. It will explore the idea of ‘imagined communities’ (Anderson, 1991) in support of football clubs and the emergence of a banal pseudo-localism reflected in the support of a club. The study seeks to find why football has emerged as an alternative to traditional sources of identity (such as nationality, religion or ethnicity), how this manifests itself (such as through flags, replica shirts and anthems), and what consequences result"
So the main themes are the reasons for the (sometimes displaced) localism found in football and the positive and negative consequences. Because of this I'm not worried about the bias of people on forum. I ask whether people care but thats because I want to know why they care.
yes, I posted it on the Liverpool forum too.
I'm going to see if I can make some changes to add a "none of the above"

All done. You might benefit for more room for comments. I'm similar to some of the above - Stoke City is the thing we do as a family - husband/wife and 5 kids - youngest is 4 and the oldest 19 and it is the one thing that bridges the age gap that matters to all of us equally
