Potentially the best Centre back pairing behind Rio and Vidic in the Premier League?

I think we've already got that in Huthy and Ryan.
Massive German youth is very streetwise and Ryan has the potential to be the best centre half around as he has decent pace for a big lad.
Given their respective ages this partnership will get better and better if we keep them together.

When fit I can't think of many better centre halves than Woodgate I really can't.

Given our weaknesses in the full back area, 3 at the back
Bego Huth, Ryan, Woody Whelan, Delap Pennant, Walters, Ethers (all free roles) KWJ
& I've still got an extra man to include ha ha

3 - 5 - 2 (if Woody 100% fit)
Bego
Huth - Woody - Ryan
Penno - Rory - Whelan - Whitehead - Ethers
KJ - Walters
Plenty of cover in defence from the 3 central midfielders

is woodgate in the squad to play split?

Not many people argue with Woodgate's ability, most that have worked closely with him rate him in the highest echelons.
If he stays fit we have one hell of a player on our hands. I just hope Huth isn't shunted out to the full back slot to accomodate him.

I agree with the original poster.
Huth is a better stopper than Ryan (at the moment) and Woodgate is the only "sweeper" or ball player in the squad to compliment him. As it happens, when fit he's one of the best if not THE best in the league!
I hope Woodgate stays fit and I hope the manager resists the temptation to bodge Huth in at full back because this could actually push Ryan on massively.

The issue with Woodgate is that even if fully fit his is hugely susceptable to a reaccurance of his old injuries.
We will be lucky to get 10 games out of him this season IMHO

Huth - Shawcross - Woodgate - Ridgewell
Who's getting through there? That's a proper brick wall !

Huth at full back was more like a sponge than a wall, he was terrible there, hence why we play wilko at rb. Woodgate is better than ryan when fit, huth is better than ryan, ryan would be back up if the two could strike up a strong partnership

Woodgate needs to go back to the Jesus hairstyle before I can take him seriously, that's one nasty side parting...

If Walters or Jones get injured without a back up i would consider putting Huth up front with Woodgate partnering Shawcross.

If Shawcross was on the bench regularly, surely he would be off at the end of the season?

I don't think Pulis will leave a fit Shawcross, Huth or Woodgate on the bench.
Where that leaves us is anyone's guess.
IF Woodgate's fitness starts getting unpredictable and he suffers regular little niggles, there won' be a problem. But if we're successful in nursing him through and he's available for long spells, things will get very interesting in the selection stakes - and that's without this 4th CB he's chasing entering the equation.

Fact is, if we get to the group stage in the Europa, there'll be more than enough games for all of them. We could easily be looking at 50-odd games this season. Centre back is the only position where we can rotate one and bring in the same quality. Well, maybe centre mid as well, but that's more due to us having a few players who are not quite good/young/athletic enough all vying for two spots.
