You pay 419 quid for a season ticket and you're not happy? My god, lets have a whip round! Who said I wasn't happy? I'm just making comment on the signings.

Woodgate - great player but NEVER EVER fit. We'll be lucky to get a dozen games. I've no problems with Woodgate either. Eh? I mean the deal - pay as you play is a good one for this potentially excellent player IF HE CAN STAY FIT. Am I excited about it? NO

Didn't Tevez miss an absolute sitter as well last season?

What i am finding a little frustrating (OK, more than a little) is not the quality of player we are going for, which is good, but the positions we are buying in.
Everyone knows what we need at Stoke. We need two full-backs, at least one central midfielder and a "secondary" striker to work on the second ball, in the mould of Walters. Secondary requirements are cover for the wide positions and a second central midfielder. The last areas we needed to look at were a target man and a central defender and yet once again this is where Pulis has focussed his attentions.
No other team in the world plays four centre halves across the back, no other team has a central midfield that contributes nothing in terms of goals from Central Midfield and no other team on earth (with the possible exception of LA Galaxy) finds a position in the team for a player solely on the basis of his delivery from set pieces. I've sat in annoyance and watched players like Pilkington, Bradley Johnson, David Vaughan and John O'Shea, players which would have significantly strengthened what is on face value a squad much weaker then we collectively care to admit go elsewhere for modest money whilst we chase central defenders and less than prolific strikers who want absurd money. I know it's probably me, but sometimes i actually wonder if Pulis is going out of his way to protect players like Delap by not strengthening in key areas.
We knew we needed 6 or 7 good players to come in so that the dead wood could start to be weeded out, and we needed to do it quickly. We have failed to do that and the fact that we are still appearing to look to consolidate positions that need no strengthening in terms of first team players is a major concern. Now it could well be that Pulis has midfielders all lined up and that i'm talking bollocks. But if we start next season without at least one new full back and with the increasingly poor Delap in the middle fo the park, i think he will have failed in his activities in the pre-season.

Who do you expect us to sign? Is this the stock response from people who can't have a negative word said? dunno - I'm not paid to scout for the club and don't know who is available. I only pay £419 a year for a season ticket. If you don't know who is available then how can you be sure that these aren't the very best players available?

Worryingly they probably are given the small pool we are fishing in.

Cole would be a very good signing imo.
I'm pretty underwhelmed by Woodgate and Taylor though.

Presume you were asleep when we finished last season with Danny Collins at centre half? With Higgy out injured for at least the first couple of months of the season, I presume you were thinking that keeping fingers crossed and maybe the odd virgin sacrifice would see us safely through that period?

Vestan Pance - top post, my man.
Pugs, I always have some sympathy with your views, but think sometimes it is the manner in which you deliver them that does you no favours!
We are indeed shopping in too small a pool, but we have done for as long a time as Tone has been here, yet he continues to pull off cracking signings like Fuller, Higginbotham, Lawrence, Faye, Sorensen, Shawcross, Delap, Huth, Begovic, Walters, Pennant, Etherington. He gets the odd one or two wrong (Kitson, Olofinjana, Soares, Tonge, Sonko, Collins and Arismendi at the top of that list), but all managers do. We do need to widen the net of our scouting, to look abroad, to dabble in South America once more (Diego scared him off it seems) and Africa (likewise Sammy, but surely Salif can help?), to look at the Dutch, German, Scandinavian and French leagues, where wages of decent players below the top 2/3 clubs are not so obscene.
A continuing failure to do so sees us hanging around waiting for the likes of Cole and Jerome, average strikers at best, to deign to give us an answer as to whether they will honour us with their presence next season, We need to have enough other targets up our sleeves that we can tell players such as these to either sign or fuck off back to the Championship.

Do you seriously believe that Tone will sign a "ball-playing" midfielder or a conventional full-back? No way. We are playing Pulisball again this season (thank f*ck)... and Delap will be once again a major force in our armoury. Once Tone starts f*ckin about with fancy dans we're f*cked. Soild back four of brick shit-house centre-halves, one in the cage with Rory, Matt and Penners on the wing with two out of KJ, CC , JW or RF in the middle .... job done.

Nonsense. Unless we inject some variation into our play we're down. Unless we've got another 50 million to spend (and possibly another manager ) .... I suggest we do exactly what we're doing at the moment if we want to survive another season.

Carlton Cole would be a great signing, if he comes. Big, strong, quite quick, not prolific but usually manages about 10+.......and has always given our CB's a torrid time when we play them. He went past Abdoulaye Faye like he was standing still, first season we played at home, when Faye was at his best. Matty Taylor would be worth signing for his set pieces alone, never mind anything else he brings. The bloke has a wand of a left foot. I wish we'd had him for cover when Ethers was struggling in the Cup final. Jonathan Woodgate's is intriguing. One of the best CB's in the country, so it will be interesting to see how his fitness goes. Could be an absolute steal or an absolute disaster, but a gamble worth taking, imo. Glass more than half full here!

Glass more than half full here! I think the important thing as well.... they all would fit into our system like hand in glove. If fit, I can see Woody playing right-back, Taylor as back-up for Ethers (or instead of when we're playing away or in Europe) and Cole is a straight forward Mama upgrade. Wouln't surprise me to see TP persevere with Wilson at left-back also.

Chill out guys were all on the same side everyone is entitled to an opinion im not excited by cole or woodgate as ive expressed in previous posts but if they are wearing the shirt i will be getting behind them .Hopefully TP is just strengthening the squad and is going to wow us with some great signings nearer the deadline .we know TP always leaves it late .For me i would pay the cash for Bellamy who is absolute quality and i think he would come now

I agree with strengthening the backline........BUT don't we desperately need a player who can SCORE GOALS for f*ck's sake, or am I missing something??? I've always had this old-fashioned view that to WIN games you have to score goals (prefererably more than your opposition) If some of our targets want to p*ss about squealing for more money, just pass 'em by and find someone else......after all, the pool is slowly drying up....... Talk about fiddling (about) while Rome burns

Cole would be better than Jones
Infact Cole is better than Jones If Cole gets his confidence back from his time at Zola I have no doubt he would demolish Jones on every aspect Everything Jones can do Cole can do better
Tp can only dream of signing Cole 2 years ago he even went to bid 9 million if reports are true now he will gets his man i have no dbout he would bring Cole back to his best

I cant help but think that if the club was a bit more honest about the calibre of players we are after, it might help with some of the disappointment that gets on here when linked with the likes of Taylor and Cole. Especially with threads like the davesviews one which mentions the likes of Nzogbia and Parker to name but two. If this is the way that TP is going to play football then fine he's definitely earnt that right, but lets make it clear from the off the kind of player that we are after and then maybe there won't be as much disappointment. Carlton Cole may very well do us a job if we can agree personal terms, but I dont think he is any better than Kenwyne, nor Taylor over Whelan. So if we are not after major upgrades then just say it instead of this moving to the next level business. We don't need names but its the clubs job to manage our expectations.
