YouTube has, suddenly and without warning, completely stopped working on my computer. I just see a black rectangle where the vids should play. No play button, no progress bar, nothing. Have un- and reinstalled java and flash. It's happening in Firefox and Explorer. Anyone got any ideas? It's seriously affecting my quality of life!

I had exactly the same problem about 18 months ago. I too uninstalled and reinstalled java and flash a number of times but to no avail.
I seem to remember I posted the problem on Google or searched YouTube's FAQs and eventually found the solution. Unfortunately PotterLog I can't remember what it was because it was some time ago.
Sorry I can't help more.

Have you tried restarting your computer? Sounds simple I know, but sometimes the re-installations of Java and Flash and all that business don't take effect until it's been restarted.
