Did anybody else see the programme?
I felt so sorry for the kids. It really got to me when the young lad was talking about getting two presents and one card for his birthday, as it was my daughters birthday a couple of days ago and she got spoilt rotten while these kids get next to nothing.
The parents however, made me really angry! Leaving aside the ins and outs of benefits, getting a job etc, the state of the houses was disgusting. Not just run down or poorly decorated, but absolutly filthy. How can these kids be expected to grow up with any kind of self worth or self respect when the parents, who are not working so are at home all day, cannot even set the example of keeping the house tidy?
The mother in Bradford was full of the usual excuses. 'Theres nothing to do that doesnt cost money and we have no money' doesnt wash. Bradford is full of free museums and parks if you can be arsed to make the effort. You can buy a day ticket on the bus for £4. I would be willing to bet they spent about the same on fags?
My heart really went out to those poor kids, but the parents need to sort themselves out, stop blaming everyone else and get a grip.

What got me about those kids was even at thier age just how grown up they were.
They had to grow up early to live in that environment. Shocking really to be honest.

I didn't see the programme last night Yorkie but I do remember being a poor kid. I didn't need to be because the old man was a hard worker and worked all his life. Unfortunately his kids came a poor second after Mr Vine, Mr Crown not forgetting Messrs Woodbine, Rizla et al Thank the Lord for free school meals, free school clothes and kind relatives within walking distance I suspect it's a huge amount to do with selfish parents which is something I won't be accused of.

I've just watched it on I-Player, i was nearly in tears all the way through, No kids should have to live like that. I agree on the state of the carpets etc, how hard is it to get the hoover out. The facts that were displayed all the way through the show doesn't show the UK in a very good light at all, perhaps the condems and labour should go and have a butchers at areas like the ones shown.

Was this the same thing that had the part about literacy? Where some kids hadn't got any books in the house so when asked to bring a book that they liked to school they brought the Argos catalogue? I get through about 30-40 books a year and that's only that low because I can't afford books purely for pleasure reading, If it wasn't it'd be higher. I can get through a 300-400 page book (without pictures ) in a week. And these kids don't just not enjoy it, they never get the chance to experience it.

I do remember hearing that, don't think it was the same programme. I dont believe it for a second though. Every kid gets a pack from the bookstart scheme at various intervals up until school age, maybe longer i'm not sure, so they should all have acess to some kind of book. Then when they start school, they have access to the library as well as every person in the country having access to free library services anyway. Again, it tends to boil down to some parents not making the effort so the kids suffer in the long term. *edit* www.bookstart.org.uk/bookstart-packs/I'm not the most supportive of the benefit system but this is one thing i would like to see changed and have more spent on it. It is nice for the kids to get but on top of the basic 3 packs, there should be extra for kids in low income homes. It is something that is there for the kids and to help them. I would have no objection to it being stopped for better off families to allow more to be given to less well off kids. Perhaps some kind of swop scheme, where if the book is returned in reasonabley good condition, they can swop them for some more to help encourage them to look after things and respect what they have. Like boxxy i love reading ( i wish i could manage a fraction of what you get through in a year) and if you can get that enjoyment into kids early on it will set them up so much better than just dumping them infront of the tv or playstation.

Really sad to watch, like some of you have said already; it's the squalor I can't understand, it costs nothing to tidy up. Lovely kids too...could have cried.
