Been browsing through one of my Stoke history books and was amazed how few games Foxy played during Lou's first stint in charge. In his first season as manager Lou started with Jason Kearton on loan,a good goalie but no better than Fox but its some of the other loanee keepers we had that make you wonder if Macari had something personal against him. Brian Horne,Kevin Pressman and Tony Parkes all come on loan(and were gash)but Foxy didn't get a sniff.Think Lou only started to play him when Sinclair got injured.Seems a bit odd to me as Foxy was a tremendous keeper and I don't think he was injured.

I believe Macari didnt like Foxy [ so ive been led to believe] Even got Grobelear in towards the end of the season [thankfully he got injured] and Macari had little choice in playing Foxy at Wembley v Stockport !! Great keeper, def should have played for England... legend imho

One of my all time dislikes for macaroni was the shabby treatment he showed foxy ,every keeper he bought in couldnt lace foxys boots especially sinclair ,he was as week as water. In an age where players are total merconaries he was a proper club man always had time for the fans ,ended up being rewarded with wembley and following season at the end with a champions medal ,remember the save he pulled off the night we won the league CLASS.

Lou told Foxy to lose weight and Foxy told him in no uncertain terms to do one. Macaris achilles heel was goalkeepers. Sinclair was bloody awful, any decent attempt on goal usually ended up in our net.

didn't he have some clause about reaching 500 games and getting a big bonus that we couldn't afdford, or was that just pub talk?

My understanding is the sane as Northwich Stokies. I'm pretty sure this finally came out in the local press a few years later.

In Lou's first game at Bradford away he single handedly saved us from a 6 or 7 goal drubbing.

I think it was St Peter who had something against Fox and that something was having to pay him a bonus.

In his second season he began to look a much better keeper in the sense that he began controlling his area better but unfortunately then suffered an injury to which he never quite got over.

I was at that match and when you say 6 or 7 i think you're being a little on the conservative side, more like 9 or 10... Must have being at least just 6 one on one's.

Was definitely Lou - just didn't like him - no idea why! ========================== Maybe, because, he just wasn't that good a goalie! I didn't like Fox for that reason - nothing personal against him other than his Ned Flanders moustache.

...remember the save he pulled off the night we won the league CLASS. I missed the save because I'd already closed my eyes in resignation. Couldn't see the ball going anywhere else but in the net. Couldn't believe it when I looked up and saw the ball going out for a corner.

Peter Fox was 1 of the best keepers around at that time and to say he wasn't that good a goalie is an insult to a Stoke legend. On the general point, whatever the reason Foxy was badly treated by the club/Macari towards the end of his Stoke caree.Macari would have picked his grandmother over Foxy if he could

Lou Macari didn't like Peter Fox, but had to play him when Liverpool's manager Graheme Souness recalled Bruce Grobbelaar from his loan to Stoke - not becase he was injured.

Saw Foxy last week in Leek town centre with his grandson.Put a bit of weight on.Really nice bloke, played against him twice in the late 80's when he used to guest appear for Leek roundtable. He used to play out of goal and was still by far the best player on the pitch. The best performance i recall from him was a Tuesday night game away at Bradford City in the early 90's.He made save after save to keep us in the game. Then Mickey Thomas scored a last minute winner to give us a 2-1 win, cracking mental. But the hero that night was Foxy.

Played for a few clubs on loan, went to Crewe Alexandra and made 188 appearances then disappeared back to Aus for 3 seasons before retiring. What a waste! He was managing a team as little as two years ago (Logan United). This is him then and now: Then: Now

Remember foxy havin ace games against Chelsea in 1985, awesome save from a David speedie bullet header. West brom away in 1990 sticks in the mind too, great mental that day for the late equaliser.

Pretty sure Foxy made his debut in a 3-0 win over Wrexham in the 78/79 season and as Greenhoff said he will always be remembered for the fantastic saves against Plymouth. Also his threat to pack the game up after being sent off in the memorable 4-4 draw against Luton.

Peter Fox was a flapper who did not command his box. Like a lot of Stoke keepers over the last 30 years he made some great saves but I expect that as a minimum from a goalie. He was/is no different to Simmo...just a bit better! He may be a nice bloke and a loyal servant to the club but he was not the great keeper that many of you seem to think. He was just ok...go on then, above average! Opinions eh?

tuum dont agree , he was an excellent keeper imho. not in the Banks league, but far superior to Simmo ! if he had played for a bigger club, then def would have played for England. we all have our opinions true, but i would put Foxy up there with the best !

Lets just put this Foxy would of played for England thing to bed - as he wouldn't - purely because ahead of him depending on the stage of his career there would of been either Ray Clemence or Peter Shilton and if ANYONE declares Foxy is better than either of them you've obviously have been over doing the crack!

I used to teach his sons David and Mark at the time of the Autoglass final so got to know Foxy pretty well. Top man, friendly and generous with no edge to him. Not your typical footballer. Also in my opinion a very good keeper - obviously not in the Banks/Shilton league but far better than many we've had over the years. Incidentally David now plays for Norwich, to my knowledge the only kid I taught in 25 years that made it to the Premiership!
