Given I currently live abroad and have lived abroad over the best part of the past 7 years all I can say if you don't take the opportunity you'll always regret it.
For me too be honest I had no intentions of ever remaining in the UK so it wasn't really a big thing moving away.
This said don't fall into the trap of thinking all places are perfect and just because you enjoy a holiday there doesn't mean it'll be a good place to live! Holidays vs living & working are two totally separate things, you might be out enjoying the beer and the sun when on holiday but for 5 days a week you have to work and the sun doesn't always shine at the weekend!
Also the best thing since the promotion to the Prem is you can in many parts of the world watch every game live on TV anyhow - just as I do - I've not missed a game since we got in the Prem.

There's a line between being a true Stoke fan and being a sad act. Stoke will not help you out with your personal life which is more important than football, so if I'd have the oppertunity to be better off abroad than here, sure I'd take it, can always follow them on internet.

Its a good point i really want to move abroad but then you think about your team and it would be werid but i suppose it is something you get used to not watching them weekly. every single prem game is on the telly in Dubai in hd. Costs a fiver per month - you'll not miss a game. you just won't be at the brit. Can even listen to p&g on t'interweb afterwards.

Do it. I had chace to move abroard in 89 when I was 19 but I stayed. Biggest mistake of my life. Stoke is a shit hole and it's not going to get any better. If I had chance I'd leave tomorrow but unfortunatley with 3 kids in school its not going to happen

It's entirely up to you. You do whatever you think will make you happy. If you don't go and think you will regret it then I suggest you go. If you are not the type of person who has regrets then stick to what you think is right for you. However, as people above have said. You can see every Stoke match on TV in many parts of the world. If you can meet 2-3 Stokies in these places then the matchday experience is not diminished in my opinion. If your only concern is watching Stoke live then I would suggest that you take the plunge and take a job overseas. The benefits far outweigh the negatives. If the job you are taking is a professional, technical position (engineering, computing etc) then your disposable income after tax and living expenses overseas in one year is about the same as the disposable income earned in the UK over 4-5 years. Financially, for a professional it's generally a no-brainer!

I left England to do a 3 month stint in Singapore in 1995. It's 2011, I now live in Hong Kong and I never did move back to the UK.
Some like living overseas, some don't & you don't know until you do it.
In '95 keeping in touch with Stoke results meant calling home on a Sunday morning having got in from Boat quay or such. Now you can watch every Stoke game on the internet or go to the pub & you can follow everything about the club via web sites, Twitter, blogs etc. Also there are many Stokies living overseas too - it's easy to meet up weekly if need be.
You need to at least try living over seas to broaden your horizons.
You can always move back.

Yes. I moved to Spain 3 years ago and absolutely no regrets. Far healthier climate. Yes of course I miss things......family,oatcakes,Stoke and many more but the reality is with the internet nowadays it's possible to keep in touch and I follow each and every Stoke game via a live stream so at least its a way of following the mighty POTTERS
If you get an opportunity take it and as other people have said , you can always move back if it doesn't work out?
Good luck whatever decision you make

Stoke is a dump compared to almost everywhere else. Do yourself a favour and get a job somewhere like Queensland. You will still get all Stoke's matches on TV.

i had the chance to leave for america in 1990, i was single, had a sponsor for work permit and a job in seatle. i turned it down as i couldnt stand the thought of not watching Stoke home and away. the thing is im now married have 6 children and lost my job a year ago through no fault of my own and havent got a pot to piss in, let alone go and watch stoke, although family rallied round to get me to the final not sure if i have a point if im honest as i love my family and almost all parts of my life, never know if id have been better off overseas and you wont either, but you can always come home if you dont like it Great reply

I lived in the US for 13 years between 1990 and 2003 when I came back here. Now live in London and travel back for home games. When I lived in NY, there was very little coverage of football on TV, and Stoke were not in the top division either. I missed it terribly and would fly back to see games (in one glorious period in 1993 I saw 5 games in 4 weeks) but, at the end of the day, I would not swap the experience for being in the US at that time of my life for anything. Perspectives are broadened and attitudes changed in a way that is impossible to imagine. Sure you'll miss Stoke, but there are many compensations

Don't do it. All experiences are not equally valid. I have lived and worked abroad and nothing matches the cultural experience that is Stoke-on-Trent. Struggle if necessary, but live an authentic life - not shopping malls and Sky HD - Be Loyal .. Be Proud.. Be Stoke.

Its fine if you really like the job you get.
I did a year in Toronto with a view to perminant move but unfortunately found the people I was working with were arseholes and ended up telling them to shove the job and came back with out a job (got one now and loving it).
So just be very careful and do your research first. When you go you will always be the foreign guy with one of their jobs!

If you had the opportunity to take a reasonably well paid job abroad you would be able to afford trips home every so often, you would then have the best of both worlds.

I have moved to a very nice part of Buxton and work on the railway with a good well paid career. I gave up my season ticket last season due to work commitments and personally it's my biggest regret but i chose to work on railways for the benefit of my small family to have a better future.
As for S-O-T, people may say it's a shit hole but it's our shit hole and anywhere else is not the same. I have lived mainly in fenton and clayton and they both beat Buxton hands down.
All my family are SCFC mad and it's embedded in my blood, trust me when i am at work on saturdays, the only place i wanna be is in the stoke end!

Left Stoke at 16 and lived in Borneo, Singapore, Germany, Norway, the then Czechoslovakia, Belfast, Taunton, Yeovil, Warminster Hazlemere (Bucks) and now long time here on the Fylde coast. Have also holidayed in Alaska, and all over Western Europe (bar Luxembourg).
I have had a fabulous life and whenever I return to Stoke I am always saddened at the result of 50 years of left wing politics on that landscape. Stoke is rightly a top contender for dump of the country.
But I have always been a Stoke supporter and am very proud of my fellow Stoke supporters, never more so than last Saturday. Brilliant show chaps - but, do get out of the area and taste another side of life if - and when and while you can.

Absolutely yes.
Pick somewhere interesting and extreme whilst you're young. Stoke will still be there when you get back , and you can watch them on TV. Travel gives you perspective. Being a foreigner gives you humility.
I've lived abroad ten of the last fifteen years, still followed Stoke on TV and when I visit , I go to the games.
I want to got to Finland next...and why not

In an ideal world I'd like to have another property abroad aswell as in England so I could go and live abroad for 2-3 months a year when the season had finished, but the chances of me ever having the money to do that are virtually nil. ;D

i was a seasom ticket holder for over 20 years and travelled to many away games over that period so you could say i was a serious supporter like many others (especially as many of these years were dark). when i had the opportunity of a better life for me and my family i didn't think twice and have never regretted it for a moment. do i moss the buzz of going to the match, yes of course but i rearly miss a game due to the interweb as my old man calls it. do it kidder, there is a big world out there and many exciting experiences to be had.

Bexhill - in your opinion - but as Stoke has held its own Labour council for over 50 years - how can you blame the tories for Stoke being the dump it remains? When I left the Potteries, I learned to open my eyes and also to think for myself, not to think as my parents would wish me to.

Are there many job opportunities for us english in Menorca? ive just graduated from university and will deffinetly be looking into going abroad to work, ive been to Menorca quite a few times mainly to Cala Galdana. I would certainly love to do a year or two in Menorca, how did you find adapting? as previously mentioned, its one thing having a holiday and its another thing to live there.

Really enjoyed reading this thread - it has always been an ambition of mine, so I would like to ask of the people on here who've done it, how did the opportunity come about?
It remains something I want to do - and especially as I am relatively young (26) have absolutely no ties and now single! Where do you find the best opportunities, I'd genuinely like to know?
