Hi,
Can anyone tell me exactly where it happened, I travel on that road quite a lot and I'm curious.
Cheers

I believe it was in the area where the trees are in the cutting just after the Motorway bridge heading from Hanchurch lights

i believe it was on the bend just past the turning for shamblers fc on the whitmore road going down to hanford crossroads. If you google ST5 4EB postcode you can see it on google maps

At school we had a bit of an urban myth going that Sammy Irvine hit the same tree.

no it was before hurst had the sheet anchor - he bought it later in the 70s. no reason why banksie couldn't have been travelling back from there though as it was popular with footballers in the 70s but i have also heard the swann with two necks story. both pubs are in the same area. The road is actually the A5182 Trentham Road if you look on a map there is a turning for whisper lane (shamblers fc) and a sweeping bend as you go down to hanford crossroads i'm pretty sure it was there.

I shall put the record straight.......... it happened on the whitmore road heading towards hanchurch lights. He was was going for a bit of treatment from the physio after the game the day before . He was overtaking and can't remember the rest, except he hit an oncoming vehicle . There was talk of the brakes failing on his car, but this was never proven ...the glass from the rear view mirror splintered and caused the damage to his eye. Rear view mirrors were improved following recomendations after the accident.
