Just a thought. Most of my non-Stoke supporting contemporaries speak with respect and fondness of the Waddo era Stoke teams. Was this true, were we liked in the 70s? If so, when did this anti-Stoke stuff start? ???

Please don't get carried away with the "anti-Stoke" stuff - it makes us sound like we're up our own arses.

We're unfashionable as far as the media is concerned but I don't feel that we're particularly disliked by other football fans. Recent chats with supporters of Hull, Palace, Bury, Man Utd, Coventry, Spurs and even WBA all appear generally up for the thought of Stoke giving the Premiership a crack. I'd hate us to be the new Millwall, all salt of the earth chippiness and inverted snobbery.

I'm saying this for the last time before I start looking for wheel pictures.
I support Leeds Utd, and have absolutely nothing against Stoke apart from being a wind up merchant.
I've not seen anything in the papers, on TV or from any other fans that suggest there is some sort of hate-thing going on. You're not disliked, in fact most people want to see a team with proper fans going up.
Fans that give it, take it, have shit days and have great days.
Thats football, kids. No hatred, just football.
Good luck.

I probably could have phrased the 'give it - take it' section a bit better, but you get the idea...

In the late 60s and early 70s we were a lot of people's second team after the club they happened to support. I seem to remember the press going out of their way to compliment us and certainly a lot of fans around the country seemed delighted with some of our results like when we scored five against Arsenal and the ending of the Leeds unbeaten run.

When Sir Stan played at an away fixture, the crowd went up by 10,000 extra as fans wanted to see him in action. Certainly made other clubs chairmen happy.

From all I've heard a whole lot of people thought really warmly about us till the Durban era, when we started to be a bit of a nothing team and then let's face it we slipped out of the public mind. This anti Pulis/hoofball/10 feet tall players stuff is just temporary I honestly think, it's just the easiest thing for a few lazy talking heads to get hold of.
But, people all over football genuinely loved the Vic and believed it was what the old skool game was all about, that part we'll never get back I suspect...

I think it was the early 70s when we started to stick it up the so called big clubs of the day
Arsenal and Leeds were no match for us on occasions, and hey presto bad refereeing decisions in semi finals etc
Fuckin amazing how we managed not to get shafted in the 72 final by some Chelsea loving referee

I don't think too many people "hate us". True, the media don't seem too keen but then a lot of that is lazy journalism. As Fornside says, we were very popular under Waddo - mainly 'cos he set up a retirement home for the more genteel old pro, and then turned them in to a great cup side (not a bad league side either). Too many years out of the top flight and some non too pleasant "followers" have had an effect. Still, now we are all sweetness and light it won't be long before the likes of Sky are kissing our rings (oo er!?) ;D
Nice sentiments prong by the way, cheers.

Are you sure mate?
I don't particularly care for any other team so I'm not arsed if they don't like us.
Apart from Sky Sports, I don' think the media have much of a liking for us.

Stoke City were a lot of peoples "second-team" in the 1970s - we never won anything but we did it with style - now we just don't win anything...I don't think we're hated in particular in the way people hated Leeds or Man U or Chelski
