Has anyobdy successfully managed to purchase tickets & then at a later date purchased more tickets but handed back the original tickets so the new tickets bought are all sat together? It's sounds confusing but I'm too lazy to sit & think of a better way to describe meself

You could always give it a go,but just think if someone in that queue wanted one,got to the front and they turned him away because they had none left, knowing for a fact that you have purchased 2

Are you saying you want to swap your seats so you and friends can sit together (as you have bought tickets at different times)?
If so I believe the answer is no you can't...

No returns.
And if you buy more tickets on the same account, you will be black marked and therefore won't get any tickets at all.

I intend to buy some more tickets this Wednesday for my family who attended the West Ham quarter final. I've already bought my semi final ticket today but was gonna try & see if the staff would do a ticket exchange for me
