The Bego/Banks thread just reminded me of this...
There are always references in the media etc about players being world class, but what does it actually mean?
Sometimes the phrase is bandied about far too casually and I think world class players should be a pretty exclusive group. On the other hand I've heard it said that to be truly world class you would have to be good enough to get into a "World XI", and that seems incredibly harsh, allowing for only 11 world class players at any one time.
Maybe good enough to be in the squad of a "World XI A vs World XI B" game, complete with substitutes? That would allow for 36 players...
How do you define it ???

Someone who would walk into pretty much any team in the world.

I define World class as somebody who comfortably plays for a top club i.e your Chelsea's, Barcalona's, Manchester United's.

It's a phrase used way too often. The only British player that would slot into any team in the world would probably be Ashley Cole. Gerrard and Rooney on their day but neither does it often enough.

Rio, Rooney, Gerrard
but no english players can match up to spanish, they are taught how to move, pass, control
we are taught to be strong, tackle etc. They are technical, we are physical.

Personally I'd say Cashley Cole was the best LB in the world. I also think the top 11 players in the world are more of a legendary status than simply world class.

people can scoff about Barca, but when you see the guile and talent each individual players has, you can safely say they really are 'world class'

In my eyes its more than just being able to walk into any team. They need to have shown their world class ability at the highest levels. For example, I would argue that cesc fabregas would get in the vast majority of teams in the world. But he hasn't performed at his best at the highest level - latter stages of world cups and champs league. Miroslav Klose on the other hand, could not get in the majority of top teams in the world, even at his best. But when he puts that germany shirt on in the world cup he scores and scores. He I think was a world class player. Its not about winning the games against the poorer teams, but doing at the top - zidane for example, is probably the best player of the last 20 yrs (maybe messi will overtake) because he was the outstanding player in champs league finals and world cup finals consistently for club and country, as well as being class against more everyday opposition.

Someone who can perform to the highest standard season after season, rather than just on occasional seasons.

I've often said that Ashley Cole is the only World Class Englishman at the moment.

It's a very difficult term to properly define.
I'd say it meant that a player would start with the top dozen or so clubs in the world.
As far as I'm concerned, we have three "World Class" players at Spurs - Rafael van der Vaart, Luka Modric and Gareth Bale.

Watching the enjoyable Spurs Milan game last night, it struck me why England is so shit at football on the international stage.
AC Milan are one of the top sides in the world, perhaps not as good as in past years, but 7 European Cups can't be ignored.
Twenty mins to go and on comes a 20 year old from Sierra Leone. It's never a young English player coming on for one of these quality foreign teams is it? We are miles behind in terms of producing quality international standard footballers.

Playing at the highest level, but crucially, being able to make a difference in those big matches, and a difference that not many others could make. Rising to the occasion rather than bottling it. Other players look to you, and feel confident with you in their team. Opponents fear you appearing on the pitch. Charisma is usually a plus, and a ruthless winning mentality
That's what I've been told makes me world class over the years anyway...

Not to favor Stoke City, but Mamady Sidibes extreme winner instinct and desperate attempts to control the ball is world class.
