Does anyone still frequent any of the pubs listed on here (that are still going of course) before a game at the Brit for tradition? Or have the "classic matchday experience" pubs of the powerleague/harvester now got most of the custom? usually have a pint in the Plough or the Gardeners these days but only because they are on the way.

This thread takes me back. Standing in the Staff at 5 to three " shall we have another pint and let the ques go down" " Ah orate". Give old Harry on door X a half bottle of Scotch for two of us to get in. Stagger on to the Boothen and stand in front of some grumpy old qunt and get told to " Get out of the fucking way I conner see"

The great thing about those day despite being surrounded by nutter's you never, as a Stokie, felt threatened. Always went in the Club opposite the ground ususally about 1/4 three to order our pints for after. Occasionally went in the Sea Lion after (Didn't Larry Parkes run that?). We once came out that late all the home tunstiles were closed and we were told by a copper to go in the away end! Luckily it was only Norwich! What was the pub next to the Town Hall, always had a mix of home and away, especially Liverpool, that I remember. The mind plays tricks!

As a youngster I often stood in the passage of the Railway (later known as the Winger) with a bottle of Vimto and a packet of crisps with half a dozen other kids waiting for our Dads/Uncles to roll out at 3;10pm (3;15 kick off in those days) and get lifted over the turnstiles in the Butler Steet paddock. Later I used the Trent Tavern before it was knocked down for the D road, the Dolphin, The Swan, Staff of Life , Uncle Toms , and the Gardeners.

wheatsheaf, talbot, sea lion[grays corner], vic hotel then supporters club opp main entrance Virtually the same when I was old enough to drink!! Which would be late '70s ish, always started in the Sea Lion, but then at one point I was in there most nights and every Saturday lunchtime regardless. The butcher 'round the corner used to bring in a tray of cooked hocks every Saturday at about 12 and the older blokes used to take it in turns to pay, I fucking loved that pub but it wasn't a place for the feint hearted.

Larry married Beryl who originally ran/owned the Sea Lion, then they ran it together until early/mid '80s.

Where did away fans drink back in those days?, I've been going since the mid 80s as a teen on my own and can't ever recall seeing away fans driking around the town centre, apart from Wolves one year when they were in the Phoenix? Was that an away pub??

Yep, i still go in the gardeners when i get up to the game. New owners though now which i didn't realise until pre-match brighton. Thinking of changing it to somewhere nearer the ground for next time actually. Been going in there since 93.
