I'm sorry but his lack of match fitness cuts no ice.
For the money we've paid for him and to him we should have a fully fit striker ready to come in and perform at the highest possible level. And that's not really Ameobi's fault is it?
It was an expensive gamble by Pulis that's showing every sign of not coming off.

ponta- he has now played 2 games and hasn't particularly sparkled. If we are to pay over half a million on a player fro 6 games we need him to pay on top of his game. Sadly Ameobi doesn't appear to be on top of his game. He has already wasted a third of his stay at Stoke. However, he could become a legend. Just imagine his first goal coming at Wembley in the 91st minute to fire the Potters up

And that's not really Ameobi's fault is it? It was an expensive gamble by Pulis that's showing every sign of not coming off. For all his squealing, Rodent's not the one who put his balls on the chopping block and went with a deal that's costing us £125,000 a game for a striker who's clearly nowhere near match fit. We're already £250,000 down and we've had the square root of f*** all back. It's sad that the stars are aligning to royally f*** up the season, aided and abetted by Pulis' ineptitude. I suppose we've just got to pray for a miracle in the next 4 games “He hasn't had any match practice and he hasn't played this year.“ Even if there was any chance - and there is no chance - knowing Shola like I do he would probably take a month to get match fit, and that's too late.

Shola Shameobi.
He's truly wank. As bad as Pericard even.

Deserves a game or two up front with fuller, i think they showed glimpses last night that they could be a dangerous pairing.

He couldn't be dangerous with a grenade in his hand.

The easiest thing in the world to deflect attention from the man responsible for this shambles is to blame individuals.
Individuals HE signed and selected.

I agree Pulis has made a real fuck up with Shameobi.
I said that when he'd signed. He's blatantly not the player we need to help us out of this bad run.

Shola is a decent player who is clearly not match fit or sharp.
He did better when Fuller came on and was excellent for an hour v Shef Wed. However, last night, with Cresswell and Mama beside him, he was surrounded by 2-3 defenders every time he got the ball.
Being asked to chase Mama's flick on's, or do something with aimless long punts clearly isn't his game, so it is not surprising he wasn't as we would expect last night.
Pulis bought him in and Pulis needs to get the team playing to his strengths.
I still think that Shola and Fuller would destroy every defence in this league, but unfortunately, I think we are getting close to it being "too late".
Very harsh to single Shola out when the likes of Pugh, Cresswell, Griffin and Cort seem to escape the crucifying that Shola seems to be getting.

"Shola is a decent player"
Based on what?
A goal every 8 games so far in his career?

Yes he is a decent player with pedigree of having scored goals in both the Champions League and the Premiershit. His goal record is also tainted somewhat by many substitute appearences.
He showed some sublime touches at Wednesday, when for an hour we played the ball into his chest or feet, but yesterday we set up to launch it high and long from the first minute.
Hardly playing to his strengths.
He isn't fit, that much is patently true, but there is only one man to blame for that.
Shola has been here for two games and has had one good and one bad. Pugh has been here almost a season and has turned in 3 decent performances, lots of shit ones and many distinctly average ones, yet he escapes everyones wrath. The same could also be said of both Cort, Griffin and Cresswell.
Shola will turn out good, if we start playing to his strengths, and get Fuller up front to partner him.
Just my opinion and only time will tell I guess.

"His goal record is also tainted somewhat by many substitute appearences."
There is a reason he was used as a sub a lot.
He didn't score enough to warrant a place in the starting 11.

To be fair his goals to STARTS ratio isn't bad at all at the very top level.
46 in 135 starts (plus loads of sub games) for Newcastle
I'm sure a FIT Ameobi could be a star at this level, played alongside Fuller in a decent team.
Rodent's quotes are interesting as someone who's worked with him for a number of years
"Knowing Shola like I do he would probably take a month to get match fit, and that's too late.
“But I like him a lot. He would be unbelievable goal scorer in the Championship.”
"But I just opened my hands there - I think he's a fantastic player, certainly rated much more highly by me than lots of other people who tend to like headless chickens running round the place who don't score"
“He scores goals.”
"...that's some gamble that Pulis has taken on someone who has seemed to have recovered from major surgery on his hip.
"And it hasn't really yet been tested because he's wasted a year. The two managers that Newcastle have had this year have chosen not to use him. So knowing Shola like I do, he'll be amazingly unfit as well. He takes a bit of getting fit.
"So Stoke have got a short period of time to get the best out of him; out of a Shola Ameobi that will be nowhere near match-fit"

We are talking Sub appearances in a Newcastle team that had Alan Shearer up front and has had to compete against the likes of Owen, Viduka and Martins.
I think that you are being way to quick to judge a player basically returning from a long term injury.
Roden't comments are very interesting!

Ameobi has played with Shearer most of the time, and not a target man like Mama. I actually agree with Serpico that Ameobi & Fuller were pretty formiddable for 10-15 mins yesterday, Palace could not get to grips with their power and directness. I think Ameobi is more suited to a passing game than chasing/holding up flick ons.
Please, please Tone, let Ameobi & Fuller go up front vs Cov and keep Sidders and Cressy on the bench. Also instruct the team to play at a big, big tempo. That way, we are way too hot to handle.

It's obvious that he was never going to come and score 6. However with mama+fuller it is always a case of stop fuller, stop stoke. Last night that simply changed to stop ameobi stop stoke. People can't compete with mama, but his useless goal record means you can stand off him and let him win some balls as long as you have his striker partner double-marked. With Shola playing in the sidibe role it isn't so simple and the hope is that neither shola or fuller will be doubled up on so much and one will get the space to do something. This may or may not work with shola in his current state, but we are yet to find out.
I can only presume that the choice not to start fuller was due to this virus and that tone wasn't lying. If tone played mama on a tactical basis, which there is some justification for doing, then he should've benched ameobi, but then there is the price tag.
