Great minds I just started another thread with the following post
I can't remember the last chance we created from open play never mind a goal in the Premiership. Every scrap we seem to get comes from a corner or free kick. It's getting ridiculous. I can now see why the media hate us so much we're almost becoming a caracature of our image. I'm not surprised that Jones and Fuller look so despondent, lazy and cheesed off when they get so little service or chances created for them. It's getting ridiculous we are almost playing for set pieces and despite scoring from a corner tonight the throw generally isn't working as much this year. Our passing is abismal and our midfielders have no vision or ability to pick out the defence splitting pass. We looked a far better team last year even with a better side on paper this season. Something has to change I just don't know what with no new personal. Ric no longer looks interested so I'm not sure how much his inclusion would make any difference but maybe starting him might do the trick.

So we've scored 2 league goals from open play this year?
Both from left-wing crosses and really good headers.
And that's it?
Gulp.

we seem to be playing like the southern media think we do. Why we have reverted to good old fashioned pulis ball I dont know. I use to defend us to the hilt about the way we played but it makes it harder the more the season goes on. Pulis upstairs and Oneil in for me. Tony has been and always will be a legend for what he has done for stoke but If we stay up ( which I thin k we will just) then it time to move him on if we are to evolve.

Not only don't we score from open play, we hardly ever shoot ! William Hill offered 7/2 for any Stoke player to score a headed goal vs West Brom! Tit that I am , I blew my dosh on the horses, and had none left for the cert of the day ! Jones looked a threat at the start of the season, and took people on and shot. That's all stopped now and it's not just Jones. Carew against Arsenal was the last snap shot I remember. Even the wingers don't have a go. Is it cross at all costs, or what ?

Both open play goals this year assisted by Tuncay Sanli (remember him?) On a point of pedantry... Didn't Ethers assist KJ's Everton goal? I can't really remember - it was so long ago... I've almost forgotten what it feels like to celebrate a goal from open play, out of the blue. At least when we have a set-piece, you can kind of mentally prepare for the possibility ;D

As long as our set-pieces keep working, why should it matter how we get our goals?

As long as our set-pieces keep working, why should it matter how we get our goals? Because there's a large element of luck associated to set pieces. If a team defends well we're hoping for the run of the ball to save the day. What really pisses me off about our fans is that if a couple of long throws had resulted in a couple of scrappy first half goals last night this board would be full of people claiming that we played well. Why can't some of you just accept that our football is and has been utter fucking horseshit? It's horseshit because Pulis has played horseshit football since the day he started management. His tactics are based purely on defensive direct play with minimal football and maximum gain from set pieces. That's it - always has been and always will be. Simple passes that I'd expect to see from 12 year olds are greeted with embarrassing levels of applause at Stoke. Last night, our defenders, probably in an attempt to prove a point, managed to grow some balls and passed between themselves on the odd occasion. It still resulted in an aimless punt up field but what was quite laughable was how uneasy they appeared when there was enough time and space to do a few keepy ups before making the pass. We play a game that only a mother could love.
